I've considered to upgrade my 6 months old x41 to x60s. Mostly I use this for word and other light applications. So far the performance has been more than enough. (A few freezings when handeling large pdf-files.) Is it worth upgrading?

It depends on what you need. I like it for the longer battery life: up to 8 hours claimed for lighting level 3 and also for the built-in Verizon EVDO which most people don't need.

Otherwise, if you are fine, just keep what you have.

Yeah, I agree.

I think that the only reason to really upgrade is because of one of the following reasons:

1. The need - current programs need more power to run.
2. The want - you prefer to have things run as fast as they can.
3. The extra money - you have free cash lying around.

If your day-to-day use is simply word and browsing the internet, you are most likely fine with what you have. As you said "performance has been more than enough".

As for the large PDFs causing your system to freeze, try using a good alternative to Adobe, Foxit.

I did the swap from X40 to X60s. If you only use an X40, its unlikely that you will notice the difference. For me, I use a desktop at work and the X40 at home and on the road running the same applications, which is basically a financial database that has Word built in to to write financial reports. With my X40, I always felt that the performance in the office was far better and the slowness compared to my desktop was always frustrating. With my X60s, there is absolutely no difference in performance compared to my 3Ghz Dell at work. The only hinderance is that I have a 24" display at work. I am therefore very satisfied with the upgrade.

Key question to ask yourself is if you feel that the X40 is significantly slower than any other machine that you use.

I bought the X60, not the X60s, and it's much faster than my two year old X40. On the other hand, the Intel WiFi card in the X60 seems to perform much worse--detects far fewer access points-- than the Atheros card in the X40.

My X60s is terrific. Great batt life, good speed, terrific keyboard. I hesitated to purchase this machine because of the many issues I read about here in the forum.

I am happy to report that my X60s runs cool and the palm rest is barely warm. No beeping noises, no dead/stuck pixels, just a great computer.

So far I have no reason to think (at least for now) that Lenovo is cutting corners on quality. As evidenced by my signature below I have 3 to compare. That, and the many ThinkPads I have had in the last 10 years or so provide me with a good basis for comparison.

I am a very happy ThinkPad owner!

I changed previous X41 with X60s, because I need big capacity of harddrive to store many Video source inside.
1.8" harddrive is max.60GB, but 2.5" SATA has 120GB now.
Maybe in this fall, we can get SATA 160GB/5400RPM from Seagate,
so at this time I replaced original 60GB(2.5") with SATA 120GB/5400RPM,it's working fine.
No heat issue, No FAN issue currently, very good machine.

Yeah, the Atheros mini-pci Type 2 A/B/G Card is the best Wlan card I ever used...

To bad it (tried 3 different versions) doesn't work in my X31 due bios restrictions (Get error message 10 with al the drivers there are on the net) but in T40's they work great.

Also had one in my X40... would stil be using that machine if it wans't that it had such a **** slow harddisk

I really like 7200rpm performance


Anyway, ill going to get an Atheros A/B/G card for my (on order) X60s
