Annoying Screen Flicker

I normally keep my laptop on, but with the screen closed. The notebook is on, and not on standby or in hibernation. When I open the screen up to use it, the display works for about 1-2 seconds, then turns black for 1-2 seconds, then comes back. Anyone know why it does this? It is annoying. I want it to just turn on and stay on
