my problem is, i think, that i am using a USB CD, to create the set..
took several tries to do the first disc and the second (i want a DVD not 6 CD's) fails..
i might try a different external CD writer..
FWIW, i am using a plextor PX716A in an external box..
i think things get "quirky" when not using ibm parts..

I was able to create the recovery CDs without any trouble: 1 startup disc + 6 other discs.
I used an LG DVD writer.

Did you already use this drive in that configuration before? Maybe it is the drive. Maybe also the blank media. I someztimes really have stupid problems easily solved by changing brand of blank media.BillMorrow wrote:my problem is, i think, that i am using a USB CD, to create the set..

I'm worse off. I tried an LG "super multi" burner in an external case with the (verdammte) Prolific 1.x combo FW/USB2 chipset. I used a firewire cable. The 1709 detected the burner as a "DVD-RAM" and refused to burn *anything* to it.BillMorrow wrote:my problem is, i think, that i am using a USB CD
I'll try USB when I have time.

Try the USB cable.
I think that is the exact same USB multi burner I used and I had no issues. On the box it says: LG 16x External Super Multi DVD/CD Rewriter.
I did use regular CD-ROM discs (Memorex 700 MB).
Athough on the drive letter at run time is does show as DVD-RAM, the burner software recognized it with no problems.

I've made a set on almost all recent ThinkPads inluding the X60 and X60s consisting of a boot CD and a single DVD. I have even made a set with an external LG USB drive on a X41 and a lenovo box - I think it uses the sonic burning technology so check if RecordNow (or Multimedia.........whatever the default burning software has been renamed to in this iteration) works

not that i have ever heard of..surg wrote:Is there a chance to 'burn' the recovery CC/DVD's to images? I would prefer to burn the discs on another PC in my network as I don't own USB burners.
NOW, i have changed everything about the external plextore 716A drive except the external box itself..
(on which i will try recording something, later)
and i have made a recording on the 'former' plextor in a desktop box and the same model plextor (i have three, two in the deskbox and one in the external box) and the replacement in the external box fails in the same way..
sooo, i called ibm/lenovo support and the fellow kindly agreed to send me a copy..
then
so, i am now up to 15% on verifying the DVD part and i'll bet it goes all the way through and makes a successful copy..
i guess, like the support guy said, it can be flaky when not using ibm hardware..
next time i'll get the X6 base..
for you new guys, this is called a "workaround"..
something "we" have been doing for years and i have been doing since 1975 when i first got interested in my first computer kit..
(which, BTW, was a polymorphic systems "Poly 88")

Thanks, everyone.atlacatl wrote:Try the USB cable.
This is a leased machine, so I gave up. A(n IBM) backup did work over firewire to DVDs. The first disk looked as though it would have fit on a CD with room to spare. They could have told me, but then it wouldn't be Lenovo, right?
Actually, I'm impressed at how much better the Java-ridden Lenovo software suite is than what I remember from the early T41 era. It works; the CPU load is minimal; etc. If I didn't have to leave it on there, I think I wouldn't mind doing so (g).
I have basic questions, but I'll post those in the right place.

recorder
external USB2 housing
recorder is plextor..
external housing is made by enermax..
the thing is just plain flaky..
then i got the ibm recovery CD set today..
the plextor won't load them correctly..
reverted to an old ibm USB CD..
slower than a glacier..
on disc 5 there was a CRC error message.. OK..?
no NOT ok, but that was the only choice..
then it continued even without all of disc 5 and of course crashed in the final phase..
after cleaning disc 5 (it was smudged) and having dinner i tried again and it finally worked..
this has been the most troublesome/difficult recovery i have ever done..!
i SUPPOSE i could have made the set i made on the T60p without the DVD and used the old/slow ibm USB CD to load it but i wanted only 2 CD's..
and strangely, the ibm recovery CD set has a "supplemental software disc" and the set created with the utility does not have this extra CD..
