Somewhat apples and oranges but still debating between this machines.
Anyone care to comment on the merits of one over the other?
Is the 14" T60p that much heavier on a daily use basis given the better performance capabilities?
x60 vs T60p
If you are mobile, the difference in weight is SUBSTANTIAL when you take into consideration the AC adapter and larger bag. I use both the X40/X60s and T43p and I ALWAYS prefer to carry the X-series TPs.
BUT, if you include the base with drive with the X40/X60s than it's roughly the same.
So if you don't need a drive and you are mostly mobile, I would highly recommend the X-series Tps.
As an aside, you can do things to make the T-series lighter: substitute the space saver for the drive; use a media bay battery and forgo the AC adapter, etc...
cheers,
CJ

Re: x60 vs T60p
I have been using 14" T series ThinkPads for years. Then when the IPS technology was introduced in the 15" T60, I chose that. I recently ordered the "optional travel bezel" from Lenovo. It's a small plastic cover that you place on the side of the computer where the optical drive goes. With the optical drive removed, the weight goes down nearly .5 lbs. When I weighed my 14.1" T60 & my 15" T60 w/bezel, the T60 was only 4oz. heavier. As far as bulk goes, here at the dimensions:spc337 wrote:Anyone care to comment on the merits of one over the other?

14.1" models (WxDxH): 12.4" x 10.0" x 1.0-1.2"
15.0" models (WxDxH): 13.2" x 10.6" x 1.2-1.4"
In terms of build quality and design, I find it exceptional. Some on this forum have been critical, as compared to the "old IBM ThinkPads". I completely disagree with this, as my new Lenovo ThinkPads are simply outstanding. And I have 10+ yrs of ThinkPad experience, so no worry about quality and functionality.
Regarding the X60s it has a very comfortable keyboard (and I have harge hands) which is 97% the size a full size keyboard. The depth of the key travel (stroke) is 2.5mm the same as the T series. The display is very nice, bright and clear. Another very high quality feature of this model is the case which is all magnesium allow. I had no idea until I purchased mine, just how nice these are. With the slim battery it's only 2.7lbs, and I get around 3 hrs life. Then I also purchased the enhanced 4 cell battery which does not protrude out the back, so the footprint stays the same. It simply protrudes on the bottom side (.5 inch) and has it's own rubber pads for the computer to sit on. It raises the back of the computer .5" so there is a nice incline to the keyboard. With this battery I get around 5 hours & the computer weighs 3.0 lbs. The X is a very solid, well built machine. This computer is a marvel of engineering expertise. It's fast, stable and fully functional. I find myself taking it everywhere, which actually was my intent upon purchasing it.
So as you mentioned it really is an apples vs. oranges situation where comparisons are somewhat useless. In my opinion, neither of these is better than the other. They are two different computers for two different applications. They are both the pinnacle of modern notebook computing. If I had to chose one over the other, it would be a very, very tough decision.
Hope this helps you....
