X6-series questions

Hi everyone. A couple of years ago (3 I think) I got my first laptop. It wasn't the lightest, or thinnest, but I used it for a year. It came with a 14" 1024x768 screen that I couldn't stand, so I quickly set about finding a replacement laptop as soon as I could sell the old one. I came to the ThinkPad T42 and bought it (2373-3VU) with a 14" 1400x1050 screen. I'm loving it, except I find it a bit heavy to lug around to classes (I am a student). I've had it for two years and have been thinking of buying an X60s with which to replace the good old T42 with. I have a nice desktop system as my primary, but I'd like the X60s to be my mobile computer for bringing to classes and taking notes, bringing to lab and working on reports, as well as my hardware design labs.

As far as processing power goes, the X6-series is top of the line (albeit they don't have 3D accelerators, but I have rarely found myself playing games on my T42). Actually, on that note, how powerful is the built-in graphics chip?

Back on topic, the X6-series has a strong processor, but the one single thing that's holding me back in the screen resolution. Resolution, in addition to build quality, size, and weight was a major factor influencing my decision to get rid of my original laptop and grab a ThinkPad. So what I'm wondering is how "bad" are the 12.1" 1024x768 resolution screens? (Keep in mind, I run my desktop at 1600x1200).

I've seen an X60s in the computer store, but it has no software installed on it so I can hardly make any accurate guestimates on it. Although I must say, the new keyboard isn't that bad. The keys dont feel as nice when I press them as on my T42, but they're not bad. Maybe I've just wore this beautiful machine in :)

Anyways, I'd love to pick up an X60s, but I'm sure many of you can relate - it's going to be so hard to give my T42 away (Espcially those of you with MANY TP models)

Ah, also, does anyone have any idea what might be in the X61's when they come out. I'm wondering if it's really worth waiting for 6 more months for them to be released, then an additional 2-3 months waiting for Lenovo to mail it to me.

Thanks guys!

You tell us that you "couldn't stand" the 14" XGA screen, but you never say why. It's difficult to tell what sort of information you're looking for.

Assuming your issue with the XGA screen was the resolution and the need to pan around large documents/web pages, then in many respects the 12" XGA screen will be the same, except physically smaller. I went from a 14" SXGA+ screen (T41p) to the 12" XGA X60s screen and didn't mind too much. Keep in mind that I'm a resolution junkie and have a 12" SXGA+ laptop (Toshiba M200) and the 15" UXGA T60p. I do think that the 14" SXGA+ screen has just about the perfect pixel density.

Yes, I suppose I'm kind of a resolution junkie as well. That was my issue with the 14" XGA, too "big" and I felt cramped.

So what is your primary machine now? the 12" XGA X60s or your 14" SXGA+?

Argh, I want an X60s but...

My T41p died, so I'm working on a T60p and an X60s (see sig for model numbers). I use the T60p when I'm not travelling. I use the X60s for travel and light duty (e.g. web surfing on the couch).
