X6x-series keyboard/buttons

#1 Post by Antioch » Mon Jun 12, 2006 10:28 am

I'm wondering if anyone who owns an X40/X60 (or has enough knowledge) can answer this question.

is it possible to remove the X6x-series keyboard, buy an X4x-series keyboard and install it? Also, is it possible to swap the little pannel that hold the access IBM, volume, and power buttons with that of an X4x-series?

It would be incredibly if one or both swaps could be made.

(Not that I have a problem with the X6x keyboard, I just prefer the X4x one )

I don't know for sure, but I seriously doubt this would be possible (unless you were willing to do some serious hardware hacking/fabricating/etc.).

"And before you ask, the keyboards have a new cable that is incompatible with the older version."

Would've been nice if this were possible...

It really would have been.

Is it just me or do the T60 keyboards feel better than the X60 ones? It might have just been the model I was using...

I don't find the T60 keyboard that different feeling from the X60s. My T60 keyboard is a little louder since it is a Chicony versus the NMB on my X60s. Both are still way better than any other laptop keyboard I've used.

I find the same in comparing my T60 to the X60s. I'm quite happy with these two and from my personal experience the Chicony on the T60 is only slightly louder than the NMB on the X60s. 98% of the time it's not even noticeable. The only time that I hear it is in a very quite environment and then it's minimal. Interestingly, the Chicony on my T60 is much quieter and responsive than the Chicony on my T43. I have not taken it apart to check the label and I'm not going to... :D

In addition, I also have a Chicony on my Z60m and it's just as nice as the one on the T60. From a purely functional standpoint, I actually prefer the Chicony keyboards on my 60 series as they are really great to type on. I tend to type really fast and the Chicony has a faster response time (or at least it feels that way) and a better tactile feel than the NMB. I used to prefer the NMB, however now that I have these "good" Chicony's when I do use the NMB it's seems rather dull.

Do you know the X60s FRUs for the Chicony and SMB? Also, do you know how I can check which I recieve with my TP?

Back when I first got my T42 I got a free replacement keyboard (the quieter one) during my first 30 day anything-goes period... and if possible I'd like to do the same with ym X60s.

Thanks.
