Merom and X series

#1 Post by rkuo » Fri Jul 21, 2006 2:31 am

Since Merom is supposedly shipping very soon now, does anyone know how long it typically takes for new processors to show up in the Thinkpad lines?

Also, does anyone know if the processor in the X60 is socketed or soldered? If I could upgrade after the fact, that might not be a bad option either.

The processor is soldered. It has always been so for the X series IIRC.

LV Merom won't ship for a while. Thus probably no update for X60s this summer.

Are you sure the lenovo people said X60s not X60? X60 doesn't use LV chips.

Unless you need the 64-bit or extra performance (est. 20%), I'd order b/c it will be awhile before they are shipping the units and they are likely to be more expensive. I use the X60s w/8 cell and it is wonderful.

I doubt that.

Honestly i doubt a lot of things people hear from reps. I talked to like 10 reps in the span of two days and all of them didnt give me one shred of any special information that I couldnt already find online or guess.

http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=32628

This article is about Dell expanding their AMD offerings, but towards the end it mentions that Apple and Lenovo are going to be 1st in line to get Merom chips. No idea about when they are going to start selling the computers though...

Can anybody enlighten me about the actual advantages of Merom? Is it just speed? Is it worth the extra cost for someone who’s not that concerned with speed?

Best

In a nutshell. With merom you get 64bit, a unified cache meaning that the cores share the same cache, and approx 20% speed boost.

Im in the same boat with you as are a lot of people, decisions decisions right? I think speed isnt going to be the deciding factor for me, price is.

The two cores in Yonah share the 2MB L2 Cache. :)

From the Tabook specs, there appears to be a shared cache:
The Tabook wrote:Intel® Core™ Duo processor L2400 (1.66GHz) with low voltage, dual-core, Enhanced Intel SpeedStep™ technology1, Execute Disable Bit, and 667MHz system bus /2MB L2 cache (shared).

Also, if I am not mistaken, it is bumped up to a 4MB shared L2 cache for the Merom (with the distinct possibility of an 8MB L2 sometime in the future afterwards as Woodcrest is planned to have that). There will also be a shared 2MB L2 cache version as well. :)

Yes and no, some clockspeeds have 2MB and some 4MB.

Nes or Yo? :D

Yeah, I know; there is a list posted somewhere in the T6X Forums about this. :)

Good article though id like to see a CoreDuo Vs Core 2 duo comparison of the merom, or the processors that will be in laptops.

Edit: this sucks, I cant even find a data sheet on the merom. I want to kow what frequencys its going to be offered at, what voltage it will run, and what its power consumption will be.

Interesting note, L2400 consumes 15watts. I did not know this.

Merom

#23 Post by nuno77 » Fri Jul 28, 2006 9:20 am

Dailytech mentions a review of the Merom done by PC Perspective. They compare the CoreDuo with Core 2 Duo, although the only thing they did was replacing the CPU on a CoreDuo Notebook, therefore the comparison might be misleading at times…

I found this article in another thread, i think it was in the hardware/software forum.

Doesnt show a big difference, pretty much how people predicted.

LOL Of course this is a good indication of the power of a CPU.
Tell me , who is (not talking about scientists and mathematicians) calculating PI or any such sort f workload all day with his laptop.

SuperPI is one of those thing which should never be used as benchmark, nor Sandra or whatever crap.

I know Merom is quite a bit beter than Yonah, but SuperPI is really not informative.

It tells you that if merom is a more powerful chip for the same thermal specs as yonah (i use a merom in desktop a system)

Depends on what is done.

Getting good marks in SuperPi doesn't mean that calculating Pi like that is the only thing it can do that fast. Should any other application require extremely fast throughput of many calculations per unit time, then you are starting to get closer to what SuperPi is actually telling you. You would probably notice it in Excel.

But for Word? I doubt many would see the difference. :)

I doubt you would notice it in excel as well unless you are dealing with some very serious quantitative information.
