Two orders, two shipping times

#631 Post by patelsunv » Sun Dec 23, 2007 8:00 am

Here is my story...

I ordered a x61s with the incorrect configuration (1.6 Ghz with Ultralight and 1 GB with 2 Dimms) on Sunday December 16th. On December 17th I called to cancel it, but it had already shipped from China on Dec 17th.

I was instructed to receive the laptop and then do a RMA.

I ordered online, another x61s (with the corrected configuration of a 1.8 Ghz processor and 1 GB with 1 Dimm) on December 18th. Today on Dec 23rd, my order is still in process. :(

I am not sure why my first x61s order shipped the next day, while my 2nd x61s order is taking much longer.

I have been a long time Dell customer, and I am looking forward to my first Thinkpad! I hope I don't have to wait till 2008 to get it.

*** UPDATE ***
The X61s that I ordered on December 18th arrived on December 26th. I just opened it today December 28th. Whoohoo!

I love the size. I am just wondering how long I need to charge it before using the battery for the first time. Next I will need to figure out how to do a fresh install of Windows XP on this unit (it came with Vista), without an external CD/DVD-ROM Drive. :?:

Simply refuse the laptop at the time of delivery whenever UPS comes to deliver. If you accept, you have to go thru the RMA process and pay for return delivery. This way, you simply refuse the shipment and it goes back to Lenovo and you get automatic credit and you don't pay for it to go back. I don't know if you get the original shipping cost back if you chose anything other than free shipping-something that is not a wise move since most Thinkpad shipments are delivered the same or next day after landing in the US anyway regardless of shipping method chosen.

I would strongly recommend against doing that. One must obtain RMA to return a product to lenovo otherwise lenovo wouldn't be responsible in case of package loss:
Return Policy wrote:To initiate a return, contact 1-866-428-4465 to obtain an RMA (Return Merchandise Authorization). Any authorized return must include the product and all accessories in the unopened original packaging, along with all documentation (including invoice, RMA and original shipping label), and must be received at the Lenovo National Return Center within 10 days of obtaining the RMA. Incomplete returns will not be accepted for any reason. Returns that do not follow these steps may be refused by Lenovo, and customer assumes risk of loss and damage for packages returned without an RMA. Please allow 8-10 business days after the item is returned for the processing of your credit.

I agree with ryengineer. Just give them a call and you will have to print out a ups label and drop it off. No real shipping costs involved for you.

I disagreee. Thats simply not true with Lenovo (or any other vendor who ships products online). RMA's are NOT required for shipments that you refuse. Once you refuse the package, the courier remains responsible for making sure it goes back to the original shipper. If you accept delivery, then an RMA is needed and returning becomes a whole different ballgame.

I've done business with Lenovo and IBM alike ever since the the first Thinkpads shipped, and I re-sell them for a living. It is common practice and an acceptable method of canceling your order when the product has been shipped and is no longer wanted or needed. Since Lenovo offers a 30 day money back guarantee, you're not doing anything you're not entitled to do under the purchase agreement.

In fact, Lenovo would rather you REFUSE delivery rather than accept and return via RMA. If you refuse their shipment, they know the package was never received, handled, opened or used by the intended recipient, and can be resold as new, whereas an RMA return, even if it isn't opened or used by the customer, still has to be opened and inspected upon return to make sure that the customer returned the exact product and configuration shipped to them before they issue credit, which means that Lenovo ultimately has to sell this as a refurbished product thus costing Lenovo money.

Most online shoppers use credit cards to order product. And vendors that accept credit cards don't get paid for a shipment unless there is proof that the intended recipient (i.e. cardholder/authorized user) took delivery of that shipment in cases of dispute. If the vendors chosen courier somehow botches the delivery or even the refused shipment enroute back to the vendor, they become responsible for the lost, damaged, or even stolen item.

Absent a cardholder signature or positive proof that the cardholder/authorized user received or signed for it, the intended recipient does not have any obligaton to pay for the lost or never delivered package no matter whose fault it is, and Lenovo and every other vendor knows this, hence the signature required and refused shipment option.

If it works for you then it doesn't guarantee it will work for others. A proper system is put in place to deal with this process.

Lenovo has changed it's policy:
Lenovo will accept the return or exchange of a product in its original, sealed package for a full refund in cases of Lenovo error. Returns allowed for any other reason will be subject to a restocking fee equal to 15% of the purchase amount. All returns must be initiated within 21 days of the invoice date. Lenovo does not provide refunds or credits for portions of a packaged offering provided at a single price or for preloaded programs installed by Lenovo. For service and warranty issues, contact warranty support at 1 800 426 7378. For inquiries relating to third party (non Lenovo) products, contact the third party directly.
You can also read horror stories online for returning a product without obtaining an RMA...

#637 Post by NikkiBelle » Mon Dec 24, 2007 5:34 pm

I purchase a X61T tablet on 12/17/07 and the Rep say they will ship on 12/28 so the was good. On the web site they said it will be on 1/10/08. Hope they stick to it, seem they are shipping earlier then the usual LENOVO TIME LINE(3 months Hahaha). And i hope the product is good and without defect, If their is any it will be the last time I deal with a chinese company EVER and find something made in the USA or Japan.

Even if you buy the laptop from US/Japan-based companies, most of the laptops are still Made in China. However, you may find some Made in Japan ones from Fujitsu.

Anyone ordered X61 on or after Dec 19? What's your estimated shipping date? Thanks.

Mine is 01/14/08 (with 8-cell battery -- the only option that made the shipping from 1-2 weeks to 2-3 weeks).

I'm in the same situation as you, cawang - I ordered an x61 with an 8 cell battery on 12/19; the expected shipping date is 1/14. But it seems some people who ordered just before we did got their machines in advance of their expected dates, often without notification or website updates -- the shipments just arrived early. So I'm hoping we'll see ours sooner than mid-January...time will tell :)

Thanks. The funny thing is...I currently use Thinkpad T42 and I assume you are the same, according to your sig.

I paid it via Paypal to take advantage of the $100 rebate. Did you do the same?

It seems to me, Lenovo USUALLY overestimates shipping dates. I think the vast majority of people here received their thinkpads before their listed date on the website. Lenovo usually does "bulk" shipments, so people with quick turn around times usually have gotten lucky by getting it in before a ship date.

Thanks, Preduck. That seems logical.

cawang, I didn't use PayPal, though now wish I had - I was placing the order quickly, and wasn't sure whether using PayPal would invalidate the Visa warranty extension. As others have since noted, paying via PayPal credit card probably would have ensured the same extension, though it seems like an ordeal to make use of it in any case. Still feel that I got a good deal on the X61, though.

And yes, I'm using my T42 now - looking forward to shedding a few pounds with the X61. The T42 is still chugging along, though it needed a mobo replacement just before the warranty expired in June, and the repair crew threw in a new LCD for the heck of it :). One of my old 600X's just bit the dust, but the other is still holding up nicely. Can't knock the durability of those older machines - I'm hoping the new generation will be as long-lasting.

Great to hear guys. Congrats! Just remember, if it takes alittle longer to get than it expected, just read my horror story on the previous pages about getting mine. Don't be surprised when you see the it's being held beyond ups control. That it going through customs. Generally speaking, it's a fairly quick process. I love my X61 and have gotten tons of complements on it's small size. I'm sure you will enjoy yours too.

Out of three identical orders I placed for X61's, one on November 24th and two in December, the first one placed in December shipped Christmas Eve and was delivered today. Kinda odd that an order placed earlier is still in process and one that was placed two weeks later already shipped. Kinda weird.

shfawaz, this one one of my biggest gripes about the amount of time it took to get my thinkpad. People who ordered theirs after me, still got theirs shipped before me. Not sure how Lenovo figures out prioity in building, but I think this is something that needs to be addressed ASAP.

I just got email confirmation that the second December order done on December 19th shipped on the 26th, yet the November 24th order is still in process.

It is indeed frustrating that there is no reason for this to happen. FIFO (First In First Out) should be the order of things. I would have thought that this is the case absent any component of a custom order being allocated, but with my orders be identical, if components are available for one, they are available for all.

Lenovo seems to have supply issues with Verizon EVDO cards, 8-Cell batteries, and more importantly LCD screens.

usually they only charge you before they ship right?

why was my order charged only 3 days after making it?

Unless it shipped 3 days after placing the order, all they did was authorize it to make sure you have available credit. It will block available credit for up to 15 buisiness days, then the authorization will drop off your account unless the unit ships within that period at which point your authorization becomes an actual charge.

My experience with Lenovo is they don't charge until shipped, and if you are paying with an American Express, that charge will probably post the SAME DAY it allegedly shipped.

My order (placed on Dec 19th) was shipped on Dec 27th (China time). It is scheduled to be delivered on Dec 28th (EST).

8-cell battery (for X series) doesn't seem to be an issue of supply anymore.

I ordered mine on Lenovo's site on Dec 19th. The predicted shipping date was Jan 14th, but the actual shipping was Dec 25th and I received it today!

Incidentally, even though I've owned over 40 Thinkpads, this was the first time I had ordered one directly from IBM/Lenovo.

your card isn't bill because they just put a hold on your credit card to see if you have the money before they start the build. they will charge it with the ship it, so your laptop has not been shipped yet, if you ordered on 12/23
