x60s refresh?

Hi,

I was reading Anandtech's article about the Core 2 Duo (Merom) vs. Core Duo (Yonah). I stumbled across this line of information.

"In Q1 2007 Intel will introduce the first Low Voltage Core 2 Duo processors, the L7400 and L7200 at 1.5GHz and 1.33GHz respectively. "

Does this mean that the x60s/x61s won't be refreshed until next year?

There's a good chance that there won't be a significant update until the new processors are announced. The X60 may go to the Core 2, but I don't see the X60s switching to the Core 2 until Intel releases the LV versions. Intel may be planning on releasing faster LV Core Duos later in the year (haven't seen the roadmap lately) if they do then we'll probably see a speed bump on the X60s. No other technology releases are scheduled AFAIK other than 802.11n (Dell is already selling that option). Next year Intel is going to release a new chipset for the Core 2 Duo (Santa Rosa) which is supposed to bump up the graphics capabilities of integrated machines. Oh yeah then there is Vista.

Why do you say that? Did you know that the Turion uses more power, produces more heat, and doesn't perform as well as the Core?

I said Turion X2 not Turion.

Are you aware that an Intel Core Duo cannot run 64 bit applications?

Originally the advantage of the Core Duo was that it ran 32 bit applications better because it had two cores.

but now that the Turion X2 is out then that is no longer the case. I would take a 2 core 64 bit over a Core Duo any day.

I use my computer plugged into a mains socket... so power consumption isn't really affecting me as it is still lower than that of an equivelant desktop.

The Turion was slow in comparison to a comparable Pentium M (running 32 bit). The Turion X2 will still be slower than a comparable Core Duo (running 32 bit). Now that the Core 2 Duo has been released AMDs only reasonable advantage (64 bit) is negated. Obviously the X60s is out of the question to run 64 bit apps at least for a while.

I am aware of that and I'm also keen to the fact that I have absolutely no reason at all to run 64 bit apps.

If you don't need a mobile solution then why care about the X60/s? I wouldn't be strapped to such a small machine with a low res screen unless situations dictated an ultramobile solution.

I dont consider 1024*786 a low res to be honest... I know much higher is available, but IMO anything higher on a screen smaller than 17" is just too much.

For portability, I dont have an x60, I was just talking about thinkpads in general I would like to see 64 bit support at some stage be it in Duo 2 or Turion form as long as I can run 64 bit apps I'm fine.
