I just took delivery of the new X60 yesterday (missed the afterschool sale due to Lenovo cancelling my order and payed a whole lot more for less ). Since I'll be going back and forth between my books and laptop, I will not be turning it on and off all the time. Just checking the powerscheme settings, I noticed that by default, the notebook goes into hibernation and standby settings within like 3-5 minutes in battery mode. Is this what you guys would recommend? In what instances would you want the notebook to hibernate and in what instances would you want the notebook to be in standby mode?

Standby will generally be faster because it keeps a small amount of energy flowing through the laptop saving state in the RAM. It is generally used if you are not going to use your laptop for an hour or so (though I sometimes use standby for longer periods of time)

Hibernate will generally be a little longer because it shuts down the laptop, saving the current state to disk. It is generally used en lieu of shutting down the laptop over night.

When studying and alternating between books and laptop, I just turn off the LCD screen. It seems to me that returning from standby / hibernate isn't worth it, because of how long it takes relative to how long the x60/s battery lasts.

Thanks. Do you recommend changing the default standby and hibernation settings then? Unless it's a good thing to go into standby and hibernation mode whenever the laptop it's not in use, it seems silly to have it go into one of these modes every 3-5min.

How do you turn off the screen?

Press: Fn + F3 (power off display and keep current power scheme).
