X60/X60s Operating System
Any problems anticipated in upgrading an X60 from XP to Vista, once Vista is released?
Reason I ask is that the Intel website lists only the T60p as Vista ready.

Vista is great - firstly i'm always a sucker for something that looks pretty so I like areo, the sidebar is great for my productivity as well (saves me installing yahoo widgets), as is a proper calander app. The general way things are layed out is preferable to me too.
That aside though, Vista will be much easier to deploy and manage for companies.
The more use Vista, the more i just think it is better thought out - I like to think of it as what Windows XP should always have been if it wasn't rushed. I will be switching my main OS to Vista as soon as it reaches RC1 as I really do prefer it, plus you know that everyone will succomb to the Microsoft upgrade machine and install it anyway (although the change resistant will switch it back to Windows Classic).

The former people probably did it for drivers and/or games, the latter did is because 2000 was the best and most solid windows os ever made.Saml01 wrote:Why did people go to XP from 2000, or 2000 from ME/98?surg wrote:Why would anyone prefer Vista?
Just curious.

That is one of the reasons I asked, as it appears from reading all I could find on the Intel website, that the graphics card on the X60's will not be compliant with Vista.snife wrote:Vista should work flawlessly on an X60 when it is launched, the betas work fine on it but you need to choose a weird graphics driver to get aero, this will have changed by when vista is final and there will be official drivers.

Vista roughly divided into Home and Business,
with Home edition, namely Basic, Premium and Ultimate.
Although X60 is came with Vista Capable Sticker, it may not means that it can run the Premium or Ultimate version of vista which is heavy graphic consumption as well as the processing.

Vista available?
I just about missed the beta testing of Vista by a day! I would love to still give it a shot on my thinkpad. Any clue/suggestions where I can still try and get a copy?

Vista RC runs flawless on X60s w/o any additional driver
I run Vista RC(5600) and Office 2007 on my X60S and it works as good as XP if not better.
I even had the aero turned on.

yeah, yeah..ubergeek wrote:I run Vista RC(5600) and Office 2007 on my X60S and it works as good as XP if not better.

i tried vista on MY X60s and T60p and while it runs fairly well, i can not get most of the accessories (wifi, et al) to run..
no drivers that work..
of course, this was a month ago..
i had some video glitches running the chess game on the T60p and the X60s won't even run the chess game..
(that crummy intel video chip i guess)..
if you know something i don't about driver avaiolability for thinkpads, please let me know..

Ubergeek:
A couple of questions about your install of RC1, if you don't mind:
1. Did you do a "new" or "upgrade" install, or do you have a choice?
2. If a "new" install, what did it do to the "SECUREDRIVE" (R on my X60s)?
3. Are all of the necessary drivers for the X60s in the RC1 build? I've read some horror stories about the video and WWLAN drivers in previous posts.
4. Did you reinstall all of the Thinkvantage s/w after the upgrade?
5. Where were you able to obtain PC Doctor, Diskeeper, etc., from?
Thanks in advance.

Re: Vista install
Hi,
Of course I don't mind helping you.
1. I installed "new" right after I got this laptop. I did not bother to complete and activate XP
2. I did not have any data so this did not apply to me. I suppose you can simply copy the secure data to non secure drive for later use.
3. Yes all the drivers are in RC. To be specific, all the ones I care such as :
a. WLAN
b. Video
c. Audio
4. No. I don't find them all that useful and would rather have a clean OS but that's my philosphy. I do that with all my laptops. I believe Lenovo does not have the FingerPrint app developed for Vista but this doesnt matter much to me.
5. I dont use any of those. The built-in disk mgnt in OS is good enough.
As you can see, in general I do not install unnecessary additional drivers and application to my computer.
I have a few other laptops including Z60m, Tosh M200 and others.
I will say that X60s runs best on Vista.
Thanks.
