Did you get the wrong DVD Burner with yur X60/s 69U or 97U ?

According to the IBM tabook, I should have a SuperMultiBurner 40Y8623 dual layer bundled with the ultrabase of my preconfigured X60 model 1709-97U or X60s model 1704-69U

But in fact, I got the crappy matshita DVD-RAM UJ-822S... which is only 2X dvd write speed, notorious for its burn errors, and can't write DL.
(With the laptop connected to the base, goto Start -> Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Device Manager -> DVD/CD-ROM)

I removed the optical drive from the base to look... and yep it's the poor burner, FRU part #39T2507 dated April '05, it's *not* 40Y8623 (FRU part #39T2677)

How about yours?

Hmm....when did you folks buy??

The bad burner has been discountinued and, before being so, it was being dumped for $99 in canada.... a fraction of the cost of the proper burner.

I looked at the TABOOK from back in March, and even then both the 97U and 69U came with option p/n 40y8623 (fru #39T2677). As an IBM employee, i know what these cross-referenced parts are and what should be shipped with what. As an IBM employee, it also means I cannot return mine because I bought it under the empllyee purchase plan.

Anyone else get the wrong/bad burner?? (if so I guess try calling and complaining)

I am curious? I have a 170469U and my drive is FRU PN 39T2679. The date is May 2006, In device manager is reports as: HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-40839.

I am not sure if this is a good one or the lesser one?

Just looked at mine. It's FRU 39T2679. This is neither SkiBunny's model or the "correct" one (39T2677). It does say DVD Multi II on the casing.

SkiBunny: It seem's ironic that an IBM employee gets shafted with the wrong burner and without recourse.

Mine is FRU: 39T2679. It failed in one of the PC Doctor tests though, so IBM/Lenovo is sending me a replacement.

The burner that CatSailor and I got (FRU #39T2507), besides slow to burn and incapable of double layer, is also notorious for its dvd burn errors according to reviews at NBR.

I suspect yours isn't the slow burner, but how did it fail

It failed the DVD linear read test on PC Doctor 5.

I have the same question, except for the z60m...

hardware profile shows GMA-4082N, which I notice has DVD RAM capability as well as dual layer capability. I was surprised to see this as any specs I looked at prior to purchase did not mention either functionality. The following info is on the drive itself:

39t2722 asm
23t2723 fru

I do not see these part numbers on the Lenovo site, but can get it close. Just wondering if this is one of the 'super' drives that are selling for over $200?

Is this a decent drive as far as you guys know? What makes the 'super' drives 'super'? DVD RAM capability or something more? What is the difference between the $100 and $270 Ultrabay drives on the Lenovo site?

Few of the z60 models came with the 8X DVD writer, dual layer writeable optical drives (except for the Z's first released in eearly 2006, or if you custome built a Z-series with a super-multi burner.).
Z61 models do have super multi burners...

It's documented in the tabook (personal systems reference book). Look up your specific model.

The tabook is gospel. Mine is supposed to come with supermulti burner. It did not. I got plainly screwed. But i have easy legal recourse, unless i'm too busy to bother with the hassle (something lenovo is counting on, i guess).

I got Panasonic UJ-842. Is it the correct one or so-so?
