I cannot install XP Professional Service Pack 2 for my X60!

#1 Post by earnestto » Fri Sep 15, 2006 4:20 am

I purchased an X60 notebook with Windows XP Home already installed last month. Due to some reasons, I have to upgrade to XP Professional version.

After successfully installing the OS, I went to install the Service Pack 2. However, I cannot successfully install it. Whenever the installation program is checking the golden key, the program halts. I never can install Service Pack 2. I have asked Microsoft and IBM but they cannot help me.

Can any kind soul help me?

Service Pack 2 will install on Home or Pro; that is, it is the same service pack. I have upgraded a client's Compaq Desktop machine from Home to Pro and installed SP2 without difficulty. One thing you might try is go the Microsoft site, search for SP2 and download the executable (it is about 275 Mb in size). Then run the executable. If that were to fail, I think you might have to re-install your Windows. ... JD Hurst

You might be able to "Slipstream" SP2 to a Windows Install CD by burning a new CD. I have done this successfully before. See articles below.

http://www.maximumpc.com/2005/01/how_to_slipstre.html

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,1838607,00.asp

The command (from Maximum PC): C:\xpSP2\i386\update\update /s:C:\xpsetupcd did not work for me. Instead I used the command (from PC Magazine): WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe /integrate:I:\WinXPPro. You have to read both articles to get a good feel for how to do the whole procedure. Also, I had to use Nero (happened to be version 4) to burn a bootable CD. For me, RecordNow! and Roxio would not make a Windows Install CD that would actually boot.

Still, having said the above, I am not sure why the SP2 update is not working for you. Maybe you need to have the Windows CD in the laptop for the upgrade to work. Another thought is that maybe Windows needs to be activated before the upgrade will work.

What was the original preload?

You should probably see if you can buy the recovery CD's from Lenovo....
