Ultrabase X6 with X60s and NEC ND-7551 possible?

#1 Post by Tom24 » Sun Oct 08, 2006 2:50 am

Hi all,

I'm curious if using the NEC ND-7551 with an Ultrabase X6 Dock instead of the super expensive Multi Burner is possible. As far as I can see only the bezel is problematic, since there's a small indentation required to fit into the dock. What about technical hurdles rendering my plan impossible? Is it generally possible to use 3rd party optical drives with my Ultrabase?

I don't want to order it, then make some irreversible corrections to the bezel and afterwards explain to the shop why these corrections were neccessary and they should take the drive back. :(

I'm not sure why Gunston posts at all...

...but as for the bezel...

On some drives, the bezel is designed to be taken on and off of the drive.

I don't have that particular model but I do have an NEC ND-6750A in an external enclosure and I just popped the bezel on and off without any difficulty. I can't imagine why NEC would start affixing the bezel onto the drive permanently but it's always possible they've changed.

Seems to me you guys are optimistic about this thing. I'll just try it out then.

You could also contact the seller/re-seller and ask if the bezel comes off. If it is a good seller they'll know their product but my experience with most sellers is that they might as well be selling widgets...they don't care enough to know their products intimately.
