This is my first post on the forum as I am about to buy an X60s. I have more or less figured out the specs that I want, the only thing I am not sure of is the HD. I will eventually be running Vista on the machine and I am interested in the new hybrid drives that will be coming out Q1 next year.

My question therefore is - are the hybrid drives a straight swap with the one that comes with the machine? I assume that the answer would be yes, in which case I will go for the cheapest available drive now and purchase a hybrid when they are out. Can anyone confirm?

On a related note, what is the easiest way to copy the "old" hard drive content onto the new one. I have no desktop available.

yes, the hybrid can be easily being swapped!!!
you might use the IBM migration software in order to fully transfer the contents from the old HD

The easyest way to copy your old hard drive to a new one is to use a 3rd party software.

The "IBM migration software" gunston refers to (I guess you're talking about System Migration Assistant, right?) is only able to migrate settings (screensaver settings, MSOffice or IE settings,...), but not applications!

I would advise you to use a software like Norton Ghost to copy the entire hard drive onto the new one. You'll have to use the "-IB" parameter in order to copy the hidden partition (which contains the factory image).

Not being too technically inclined, and apologies for a stupid question, but how do I go about actually copying the old hd content onto the new one in the absence of a desktop or a docking station that has a hd installed?

Do I just buy an enclosure for the new drive, connect it via usb and run the software from the external cd/dvd? When this is done, just swap the drives (and use the old one as an external hd for storage or backup)?

If you can copy the data to network server, you need Acronis True Image + an usb flash drive (128mb will be enough).

Acronis true image can make your pendrive to boot media.
At boot time press the F12 button and boot from the USB drive.
After that you need to copy the image of your hard disk to the network server (backup the full disk). After that you can insert a new hdd into yur thinkpad and make a restore from the network server.

Thats all.

Do you think this is an SSD (Solid state disk)?
Sata version 16gb drive about 4000USD. Not worth the costs.

A solid state drive that you refer to would be even nicer, but yes, a bit too costly

Hi all!

Just wanted to share that I received my X60s yesterday. I just love it!

I uninstalled the Symantec antivirus and am currently running the ZoneAlarm security suite trial. I may also try the equivalent from Panda.

Two 1Gb memory sticks are also on their way, as is a small travel mouse and a Freecom FS-50 portable optical drive.

I still need to get my hands on a nice sleeve for the machine (I like the ZeroShock), but these appear to be quite difficult to come by in Europe...
