A somewhat realistic X61 wishlist

#1 Post by slowernet » Wed Nov 15, 2006 1:27 pm

* SXGA (1280×1024) or SXGA+ (1400×1050) option (exists on new tablet)

* Intel X3000

* DVI out

* Replacement of the Ricoh CardBus controller with a model more compatible with outboard multi-head video

* Move the Windows key out of the way of left ctrl/alt

* Bring back the parallel port :D

SXGA doesn't work as the display form factor would need to change.

I'd love the keyboard change but I don't see it happening ...

They could just change the size of the bezel.

Ugh ... that would be an extra 3/8" of bezel on the left and right sides. SGXA+ makes a lot more sense, especially since the X60t already has that panel.

DVI-output just on the Ultrabase (or dock) would be good enough, it doesn't need to be onboard.

Actually that brings up another modest request... make the 'dream' X61 work with a docking station and/or port replicator! Preferably the same ones the T and Z series use.

You know, I never did the math and realized that SXGA isn't 4:3. Bizarre given how it fits into the naming convention and the historical dominance of 4:3. I wonder why it was chosen over 1280x960 for "one notch up from XGA"? Maybe it fit into VRAM better.

I think there is some discussion of the history in the Wikipedia entry, something to do with the 1024 being a power of 2.

1280x1024 is terrible on a CRT as the pixels are no longer square. It works OK on an LCD, but I don't like the 5:4 aspect ratio personally.
