Hello everyone,

I've been considering getting an X60 for quite some time. Before making the decision, I would like the chance to try one out in person to see how comfortable I am with the display and keyboard. I haven't been able to find any local places here in Ogden, Utah that carry the X60. This is really frustrating me because buying something like a laptop without trying it out seems foolish to me, but so far, it looks like that's what I might have to do. I'm hoping someone can give me some pointers on where I might be able to look at one of these machines or at least give me some advice on what to do if I can't find a place to try one out.

You might call to see if the University of Utah Bookstore has any display models. I know they sell T60 and X60 models for the law school, but I'm not sure if they have floor models.

I believe you have 30 days to get a full refund if you purchase a Thinkpad from Lenovo and change your mind.

If you are really serious, order one from lenovo. Although they have a 21 day return policy that charges for opened items, in practice they will waive the restocking charge for a first time buyer. the charge is to discourage some ppl who repeatedly use/return product. You will get one free return, if you explain oyu couldn't see the model in your area

X60/s won't set you down.
try if for 21days, and return if you don't like it.

Go with the X60.

I've owned many, many laptops (for your average person, not necessarily that many compared to some people here), and I can honestly say that my X60s is the best laptop since the days of the Pentium II Thinkpads.

The keyboard is phenominal. The screen is very nice (size is very easy to get used to, as is the low resolution (I came from sxga+).

Its a marvel to carry around, even with the 8 cell (which gives it the most unbelievable battery life ive seen).

Unless you need a power horse, the X60 is the only choice.

You can get an X60 with 2 GHz C2D and 7200 RPM drive which is fairly powerful if you don't need high performance graphics.

X60(s) is definately the best. I'd just get it...

Those are tall words. I owned a 760, and it would take a lot to live up to that kind of quality.

I don't like the small screen and the tiny alt key & undersized spacebar (since they added the dam windows key). Otherwise it's great. The build quality of my X60 is better than my T4x series.

Be sure to get one with the Atheros instead of the intel. There have been hordes of complaints about the 3945 card.

Get the wireless with 802.11n and you will have the Atheros.

I just have to throw my hat into the ring regarding the X60s: I absolutely love this machine. I own a 15.4" widescreen lappy in addition to a desktop with a 19" LCD display, and I had very little trouble getting used to the tiny screen. I have small hands, but I don't think I need to say anything more about the outstanding keyboard that hasn't already been said in umpteen other threads. The battery life (8 cell) blows my doors off. Being able to take it into work and not need the power cord is amazing. I can't wait to take it to Chicago next week for a conference and only have to worry about lost luggage.

While I have yet to need a CD burner while on the road, since USB drives are typically all I use, it's a shame it's not integrated, nonetheless, like the Panasonic. Also, the lack of an S-video out to this day has me shaking my head. I got my X60s in August with a Core Duo processor and 1.5GB RAM, and this thing is FAST. No problems running Paint Shop Pro X, either, unlike my (old) desktop with the video card.

Finally, as many have said, the build quality is superb. I looked at the new ultraportable Toshiba and was disappointed in the build quality, reviews on websites notwithstanding. I read so many positive reviews about the quality of this unit it became a no-brainer. I love carrying my laptop case (with Waterfield sleeve inside, natch), and having to check to make sure the lappy is in there. IT IS THAT LIGHT. If you don't mind the small size of the screen (and I LOVE IT), you will not be disappointed.

For me, the small size of the screen isn't a problem at all, but I do find the low resolution (XGA) somewhat inconvenient. Other than the resolution, I have enjoyed using all of the X series models I have used (three X20's, two X22's and one X40). The keyboard is just as easy to use as those of the T series, A series or the 600 series, and better than the 240 series (which is quite a bit smaller). There are probably no other ultraportable laptops that are as sturdy as the X series Thinkpads.

The reason I cling to my X60s like Moses holding on to his staff and waving the seas apart to let the Israelites fleeing Pharaoh and exfililtrate Egypt, Is simple: I rely on my notebook for communications, and I’ve not yet been to any place where I couldn’t hit a WiFi spot, or catch a signal from Verizon’s EvDo network.

Hey, I just wanted to say thanks to everyone for their quick and informative responses to my questions. In the replies, it was mentioned that you can return a Thinkpad to Lenovo within 21 days and avoid the restocking fee if you're a first-time buyer. I called Lenovo and just asked what the return policy on thinkpads was; they told me that the restocking fee applies if you open the product and return it within 21 days. While I don't doubt that they have waved the restocking fee at times, I'm wondering whether this is fairly common or whether it's something I would really have to fight for. Has anyone had any experience with this?

Also, I don't want to give the impression that I will most likely be returning the Thinkpad. It looks like a great machine, and I'm really excited about getting one; I'm just a little concerned because I've never had a laptop before, and while the Thinkpad's small size attracts me, it concerns me as well. Anyway, thanks for any help you guys can give.

Have you tried finding similarly small laptops at a local store (Best Buy, WalMart, etc.) and playing with them to see if you like small laptops? One with a 12.1" display and around 3 pounds in weight. If you like those non-Thinkpads, you will like the X60 even more, e.g. the keyboard will definitely be much better.

I too was worried about the small size when I was considering buying an X60s. Myself and everyone I know have always used 15" laptops, so 12.1" seemed tiny in comparison. I always felt, though, that 15" is too clunky and heavy to carry around, so I went for it.

Now that I have my Thinkpad, I feel the size is without a doubt the best part about the X60 series. At first I was surprised by how small and light-weight it is. Now, however, the more I use it, the more I realize it isn't small, other laptops are simply ridiciously over-sized.

12.1" is the perfect size for a laptop.

Interesting, I always thought that 15" laptops are common only in the States. Whenever I go to international conferences, I see all these foreigners using super tiny laptops that are even smaller than the X60s.

well,
i have the same thought as you guys before getting a 12' X60s. Afraid that i couldn't use to the small screen of X60s.
However, the more i use my X60s, the most i would love it.
Just like what you have mentioned above, 15" lappy is ridiculously oversize!!!

When i purchased my T60 the X60 was on display i played with it for
Minutes it looks and feels great like a small T60.
