My model is 1702-6nu.
The hard drive is 100G Hitachi 5400RPM.
I think the noise comes from the hard drive area. It sounds like the hard drive, but I am not sure.
Anybody else got the same experience? Should I call Lenovo?

I have used the NHC software. I know you guys are referring to a post complaining about the noise level. I have done extensive research on this forum and tried possible means.
The short answer: THE NHC does not do any good. I donot see it spins down at all.
However, I do notice that after about 30 minutes, the machine will be very quiet. I believe the hard drive goes to sleep mode after then. That may confirm that the noise comes from the hard drive.
Anybody know if there is a second fan around the upper-right corner?

A HDD is NOT a car engine -> you can´t change the rotation speed!!!
Try to set your hdd in silent mode by using the hitachi tools (it´s a bootable cd from their webpage)
