( Question ) Maximium amount of ram for 1706-85U X60

New to this side of the forum.

As a NEW X60 user i am not really sure of the max ram that my machine can handle reading on the HMM there are differents options, and know here comes the question does my machine supports 2GB of ram or four? I would like to top off to the max quantity possible for my machine.

You can install 4GB but Windows and Linux can only use 3GB total.

So you could install a 1GB stick and a 2GB stick. If you do this, the memory will be mismatched and it won't run in dual channel mode. Dual channel is supposed to increase performance, but I'm not sure what the actual performance difference looks like.

If you want to install the maximum amount of memory, running in dual channel, and not wasting a GB of memory...two 1GB sticks is your best option.

The other issue is that a 2GB stick is pretty expensive compared to 1GB. But if money is no issue, go for two 2GB sticks.

As was stated, the maximum usable RAM is 3 GB, but unless you have some extremely memory intensive application, you'll never use it and 2 GB should be more than enough.

A 2GB RAM is about $500 now.

Best to spend money on a Dell 2407 24" LCD 1920x1200 which you can use with your X60s. It goes on sale often enough. Check www.dealcatcher.com or equivalent site for coupons. Also, check ebay for coupons.

Has anyone has his X60 running that way? Did you really see any difference?

I believe i will go with the two 1gb rams if there is no benefits in installing the two 2gb rams.

I'm not sure if it was an X60 person or a T60 person, but someone on forum.thinkpads did it. Run a search for 4GB and contact the person.

An extra GB of RAM probably won't help most people. You can probably buy both 1GB sticks for $200 or less, combined.
