RAM question for X60 - 63668KU

The unit comes with 1gb of RAM using only one stick, leaving one opening. Can I put a 2gb stick in the available slot or does it have to be 1gb to match the other?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Greg, how you doing?

It's my understanding from previous posts here that you can put a 2gb chip in the open slot, although I am not clear on whether the unit can utilize more than 2.5gb total RAM according to a previous poster who did what you are wanting to do.

It's my understanding that X60/s (and any of the dual core laptops with an Intel board) can use up to 3.2GB for the OS, so you could use all 3GB. However, if you have a 1GB stick and a 2GB stick it won't run in dual channel mode. It's not clear what the extent of the performance difference is between dual channel and non-dual channel, but there is supposed to be some difference.

The other thing you will run into is the cost of 2GB sticks compared to 1GB, but if you've the money to burn it's not a big deal.

EDIT:
In the tabook (footnote 31) it states that the OS can only address 3GB even though 4GB might be in the machine.

Welcome to the X60(s) club!

The units are 3GB addressible, but frankly not worth the cost for the 2GB RAM stick which is in the $500 range.

You'll not see any difference in performance unless you are doing something with really large files.

Looks like the 1gb stick is the way to go. Have ordered the RAM, UltraBase and Waterfield Sleeve and am waiting for the 15th!

Guess the T60p 2007-94U will be seeing eBay soon.

Thanks

Why not keep both? :)

From past experience, I will only use one of the other. As the X60 tablet will be used daily in work the only other use for it is doing the Internet at home on the Cisco wireless. The X60s will do this well.

In the past the 2nd laptop just sits in the drawer unused. It only has a few hours on it and is as new. with 2gb RAM
