New X60 fan on all the time.

#1 Post by sagara » Sun Dec 17, 2006 4:43 am

The fan on my new X60 is on all the time - it only goes off when I go into standby or power down. At this moment the cpu temp is 35C, speed 1GHz, and I can hear it quite clearly - I have the NHC installed, although it doesn't work in the same way as on my T41 (no fan problem here). Clearly at 35C there is no need for the fan to be running. Is there some tweak I'm missing (not quite used to all the tweaks on the X60). Apart from the RH side of the palm rest, which gets warm, there are no hots spots anywhere else.

You could download this utility:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/tp4xfancontrol/

and set the manual temperatures where the fan turns on/changes speed. Read the readme for details.

It may be that the BIOS control of the fan is triggered by other temperatures in your machine that are higher than 35C.

By the way, what processor do you have? My L2400 has been on 10 minutes and I'm at 46C...but my fan's not running yet.

Thanks for the fan control page. I've downloded it it but as yet haven't had the time to set it up. My cpu is a T2400 1,83Ghz. Runs even at 34C!

Pretty impressive...you have me thinking I ordered the wrong processor. Well, at least I have the slimline battery.

Good luck w/ fan control. It's easy to setup once you read the info...takes a couple of minutes. It should solve your fan problem pretty quickly.

Read the file, but only way I can get the fan to stop is to set it to '0' manually. If I set it to Smart the fan runs even faster than normal! It is set to go off when CPU is at 48C, but clearly doesn't.

Addition: Under Temperatures in Fan Window, I have 'CPU 37C', them 'APS 50C', etc. It seems to be this APS that's being monitored and keeping the fan running as when I put the mouse over the icon it comes up with 50C, the APS temp. and not the CPU temp. which is 37C!

Further later addition: managed to get the TP Fan Control software working OK. Only occational problem is that sometimes when the fan changes speed (or stops) due to temp. change, I get the message 'Warning: Can't read status (possible conflict with other software). Oh, well, better than nothing. But sometimes this happens when the fan is at 0 (off) and wants to cut in but can't. If I'm not around, this means that the temp can keep rising and the fan will not cut in!
