I haven't been following this section closely, so forgive me if this is common knowledge.

You can customize and buy a ThinkPad X60 Tablet with a 12.1" SXGA+ (1400x1050) screen and 1.83GHz Core Duo CPU.

No, it's not common knowledge yet because it's very new. I checked the Lenovo site about two days ago and they didn't have the SXGA+ option yet. Thanks for letting us know!

Ouch, $2600 as configured. Not gonna make me sell my X60s just quite yet.
I was actually hoping to keep my X60s for a little while, but if we see SXGA+ in "normal" X60's, I might have to reconsider.

Just so people know, prepare to wait for the SXGA models - Lenovo is pushing some orders out to 2/1/07. Also, I've noticed that they charge your credit card even though the item may take a long time to arrive.

It's most likely well worth the wait - but people should know that "Available Now" doesn't apply to all configurations.

The standard XGA models appear to be shipping a bit now though!

Have fun, and hopefully the boards will be filled with new questions and info about the machines themselves :-)

My estimated ship date was 12/19/06 (today) and just got pushed back to 2/6/07! I guess it is the price we pay for a decent resolution.

Ouch! I'd call and complain, they shouldn't be pushing them back nearly two months. When did you order?

I ordered my X60s during the Back to School Sale - normally $2499, I paid $1799. Even with the tons of people who must have been ordering them, I only waited 3 weeks, and it shipped the day of the actual original estimated ship date. If I recall correctly, I ordered it 7/28, shipped 8/21, in my hands 8/23. Not the best ship times, but from what I've heard I got lucky.

I ordered it back on 12/11. If calling to complain would speed up my order, I'd do it. I'm not too high up on their priority list (I've only ordered one other laptop for our company about a 6 months ago from them), so I don't think I have too much weight to swing around there. I'm sure they are much more concerned about shipping the SXGA+ models to a company or university who ordered 100 units as opposed to me. I just don't understand why lenovo has a hard time sourcing the LCD when other companies have had 12.1" 1400x1050 panels for years.

Nobody ever said that there weren't sacrafices to be made to get a decent computer. I just regret that my company has to pay the price of decreased productivity (like the time it took for me to write this reply)

just wondering, am i in the minority for preferring a xga good-ol' fashioned 1024x768 display on the xseries. I think i did sxga on a dell laptop when i was between thinkpads and everything was just too small for me.

..then again i would love to fit more on a screen, i don't dock as often as i used to, and every once in a while i find myself min/max-ing a little too much. oh well.

p.s. i looked at macbooks today and they looked like crap. default glossy now, no thanks!

I've been thinking about this, and I can see where the higher resolution could make a difference when using a stylus with a tablet. Presumably the resolution of sensitivity to the stylus corresponds to the resolution of the screen. So higher is better in that your stylus movements don't have to be so exaggerated. This relates to a problem I have signing my name on all these new, fandangled credit-card terminals in stores these days. I can write my name using plain old pen and ink in a very small space. Yet when signing on an electronic terminal with a stylus, I always run out of room, usually after just my first name, and I'm forced to exaggerate my movements to get anything legible. I hate signing those things. I feel like I'm writing my name with a thick crayon. Higher resolution and a finer stylus would help a lot.

When just typing though, as with a non-tablet, I'm not so sure that I'd want the higher resolution. Maybe. I'd probably order it and try it, if it were available.

BTW, now I'm thinking of a question: Does Vista make things better with respect to disentangling apparent font sizes from pixel resolution?

I pretty much feel the same way about it as Jonathan, especially about those stupid signature pads in the self-checkout lines. I also have the same question about how well Vista works when scaling the text size, icons, etc.

I guess the thought is that if the text is too small, I will figure out how to scale it. Some things, such as CAD or graphics editing, always seem to be better on a higher resolution.

The only real drawbacks I can currently see to the higher resolution screen are: no multiview/multitouch, not currently shipping, and slightly more expensive. Given all that, though, I'm still waiting for my 1400x1050.

For 12.1", I agree that SXGA+ (not "SXGA") is too high. But I do want more real estate than 1024x768. I wish these was an SXGA option, i.e. 1280x960.

Isn't it possible to set an SXGA+ machine to lower screen resolutions like 1280x960 in the monitor settings control panel? I would think that buying an SXGA+ system means one can set it to 1024x768 and higher..

Maybe not...

Yes, but it won't look good. Unlike CRT monitors, LCD monitors look good only at the native (i.e. highest) resolution.
