I'm doing a clean install of Windows XP SP2 on my X60. I do not want to use the recovery discs; I take a minimalist approach to what I install. My specific model is 1706-B5U, and this is what I installed so far...

• intel matrix storage driver
• xp update package (from lenovo)
• chipset driver
• acpi power management
• video driver
• monitor inf
• sound driver
• modem driver
• ethernet driver
• wireless driver
• touchpoint driver
• hotkey driver

When all was said and done, I found that there was still an "Unknown device" under Device Manager. Any idea what I could have missed?

Hi. I have several X60s here for me to look at. Can you post a pic of what all devices you have and I can compare to what is missing. Also are you installing Standard XP Pro or are you putting the tablet edition.

Did you try Software Installer? It might help.

Depends on what's on your system, but it might be the TPM.

mephie called it -- it was the TPM. I must have overlooked it when I was going through the driver matrix and downloading the drivers. I installed the TPM driver, and the "Unknown device" disappeared. Thanks mephie!

oh please Duo Secundus, can you tell me how exactly did you clean install XP without using the recovery discs? did you buy an oem windows CD or what? i tried clean installing according to instructions in this forum and it failed so i used a windows cd from another machine i had but this ofcourse is without a license, and it's not so comfotable for me. i dont want to re-install with the recovery discs as i dont want the hidden partition. Microsoft tells me i should BUY a new windows license...
any other ideas?

I would just borrow a WinXP CD from anyone you know and install it using the serial # under the unit.

Btw, what does the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) do?

Unfortunately, just borrowing someone's XP CD won't work, because you'd have retail code with a VLA/OEM prod key. If it even let you past the prod key screen, the Windows Genuine Advantage nagware would definitely fail.

You should be able to burn the entire i386 folder to a CD and run winnt to start an install (note: not just the contents of i386, but the entire i386 directory, so you'd run winnt out of cdromroot\i386).

As for the TPM, it holds your Storage Root Key and does the number crunching for AES encryption using the Client Security Solution.
