X60s not going into hibernation after standby

I have two X60s and have the TP power manager set to put the laptops into standby after 10mins and then into hibernation after 30mins when on battery power. My power options under control panel also mimic the TP power manager settings.

So after 10mins the laptops go into standby but then don't go into hibernate after 30mins. My old X30 did this no problem.

Any ideas why this is happening? My bios is 1.06 and am running XP pro.

It was disabled but when enabling it there is a warning that the PC may come on and could damage the HDD if it's being moved at the time. Also that battery could drain if there is an event waiting for user interaction.

I would have thought that the standby to hibernation would work without this setting.

[Edit] Forgot to say, enabling the Timer wake in the bios does the trick. just worries that the laptop may come on for some reason due some scheduled task and either just run my battery flat or stuff the hard drive while the laptop is in transit. [/Edit]

Well, if you're swinging the laptop around in your bag, when it decides to come out of suspend so it can write memory to disk to hibernate, then that's got a good chance of damaging the hard drive.

Your X30 was able to avoid this issue because it had RediSafe, and would write memory to the hard drive before entering standby, so the standby to hibernation transition didn't involve accessing the drive, and could be done safely. If you want similar behaviour from your X60s you can install vista, whose sleep mode works this way (superceding both suspend and hibernate of XP).

I would have thought that the standby to hibernation would work without this setting, if you're running from the AC adapter. I would expect that you need this setting, if you need it to work when running on battery. However, the way the warning is phrased, maybe you are correct.

Does enabling this option solve your initial problem, anyway? If so, then it's worth considering possible downsides. If not, then just disable it again and no need to worry.

Yes it solves my problem thanks. Enabling the setting now allows the TP to hibernate from standby while on battery. I'm still not 100% happy with the risk though.

Perhaps it may be better just setting the power manager to go just turn everything off after 5 mins and then go straight to hibernate after 15mins and forget about the standby option.
