SD card reader - rendering files unreadable?

I've experienced a problem with the SD card reader in my X60 (work computer). After downloading selected images from a 1Gb Sandisk Extreme card, I returned the card to my camera (Canon SD700), planning to later download ALL the images onto my home computer. When I looked at the images again on the camera, several, BUT NOT ALL, came up with the error "Unrecognizable image format". FYI: I did not use any applications to download onto the X60, I just dragged and dropped the desired files. And the ones that have this error are not just the files that I copied to the X60. Needless to say, I was hesitant about re-inserting the card back into the X60 again, but eventually found that write-protecting the card with the lock switch prevented recurrence of this problem. But questions remain: why did some files get knocked out and others remained unscathed? I did not expressly delete or modify any of these files while the card was in the reader, so how did they get altered? Anybody have ideas or similar experiences? My wife is angry 'cause some really cute pictures of the kids in Yosemite got toasted.......

Thanks, I will try to rescue the pictures using PhotoRescue if I haven't already erased the card! :D But the thread doesn't quite get at my question. I didn't use an external reader, I used the onboard SD card reader, and no special apps like Palm Sync to download the pictures, I just opened the card from MyComputer and manually moved files over. ....

I too use Sandisk Extreme III Sd cards (2g), and have experienced no difficulties/no problems while downloading the card in the X60's SD slot, or after I return the card to the camera.
