1394 Firewire Problems

Been spending a few hours at IBM Service (Singappore) on this....here is the scoop
I have a new (well 2 months old) X60 1706-B35 1.8Ghz C2D 1GB Ram 80GB SATA (Toshiba) and Bios is 2.00f (as was set in the motherboard replacement - read on)
I used to use a ZX-8 external USB2/Firewire combo interface disks various (currently 300GB) on my X31 and it worked fine.
Enter the X60... so the 1394 works fine for DV camera transfers but fails to see anything - ZIPPO - when the ZX-8 is connected.
IBM and I did some testing and at first thought maybe a windoze problem... but moving the drive to another X60 (not a B35) proved the OS was fine and it saw the drive in different hardare....OK... so just to prove a point we put the non B35 disk into my machine and ... nothing...so hardware problem right....well....
So I get them order new part... a week later they call me and I turn up and pass the B35 over....5 hours later I turn up with my Firewire drive to test it and same problem...only this time the machine has a brand new motherboard...now if u have ever looked at the X60 there is pretty much only a mother board and not much else you can replace...
soooooo i left IBM to work my old board (and a couple more they would order) and took my 99% working machine back and now I am waiting for them to call me....
Does anyone have access to a 1706-B35 X60 and a firewire disk (externally powered that could tell me if it works or not and what versions of Bios motherboard they have?
Any comments, ideas to try or whatever would be of much help.
Anyone also in Singapore with a similar spec'd machine would be glad to compare notes too...Thanks in advance!
PS yes I know I can use the drive with USB, but my skills with data recovery from firewire are significantly stunted without this working.
Not sure is old iPods are affected or not.
