Can I demand replacement X60 instead of repair?

I have been having problems with my T.P. (x60s 170463U)for months now.
It sometimes is difficult to start, other times it starts then freezes within the BIOS or within 5 minutes of loading Windows.
Once I pass that 5 minute mark, it runs fine.
Even though the problem has existed for a while, it is getting worse it seems.
I have contacted Lenovo Tech several times and followed every recommendation from them.
-Going thur MSCONFIG repeatedly.
-Reloading X.P. from the BIOS.
- Reinstalling X.P. twice from the R&R disc they sent me.
-Resitting the Memory. (I bought two 1GB to replace the original 512)
-Replacing the Memory (Both Chips.)
-Replacing the HD twice at their recommendation.
-Reinstalling X.P. yet once again.
ALL the other times I called, they said the above items were most likely the cause.. (NOW they are finally saying it might be the Motherboard.
My question is since I have followed everything they said, and I have acted like their free technician (troubleshooting, replacing parts , loading operating systems and so forth)
Can I say enough is enough, I just want a new system ( no upgrade, just the same model) and refuse to have them replace the Motherboard?
My reasoning is I feel I went though all this grief, time, expense and effort
for nothing, just for them to do what they should have done in the first place.
( have me send my system in for service long ago.)
And what if the TP in working fine that particular time they start it up?
They are then going to return it back to me un-Fixed,
Then I have to re-send it back in once again. :banghead:
Since a motherboard is such a major repair item , can I demand an out-right replacement ( again, I am not looking for a up-grade, just the same model) even though I am under the basic (Easy Serv) warranty?

You can try...it cant hurt to ask. Support has always been good to me, so they may very well go along if you ask them in a respectful and logical manner.

I will try.
when I spoke to the tech people about it, they said I had to wait for someone from tier 2 to get back to me.
I am still waiting 3 days later...
I was under the impression that replacing a Motherboard on a DeskTop pc was fairly easy.
But replacing a Motherboard on a small notebook like the X60s was fairly difficut.
And what if its NOT the Motherboard, but the CPU?
I really can't afford to send it in, be without it for a week, just to resend it back in for another week. :cry:

"Difficult", I suppose, is relative. I can do it in 15-20 minutes, as should anyone who has any experience working on laptops. I think that it would best be described as more painstaking. Desktop board replacements are like "snap snap, done", laptops are much more laborious.

I may be mistaken, but I can not see a cpu failure causing this problem. I suppose its not an impossibility, but a mobo failure is much more probable.
Either way, the X60/s' have the cpu soldered into the board, so unless they actually de-solder the old one and solder it into a new board (which I don't see them doing), you'll probably get a new chip with your new board. (Whether or not they replace the cpu as well would be worth asking, too, I suppose.)

Hi.
thanks for the help.
I am just at my wits end.
I am so worried that I will send it in,
They replace something ( motherboard) and the problem will still not be fixed.
Is the power supply on the motherboard too?
The issue I am having has gotten so bad lately.
at lot of times, I have keep pressing the power button.
the battery led and plug light only comes on.
other times, the battery light, plug and power on led comes on.
other times, the above and the H.D. light comes on then qiuickly goes out.
It's like it tries to start but can't complete the whole process.
Or it will start then freeze in the BIOS before window loads or it will load windows then a few minutes later it locks up again.
But once it is on for a while very thing seems o.k. and stable.
Somethings I get a blue screen ( telling me it is dumping the momory, or that its a hardware problem, or a page-file error.
most of the time no message.
Except sometimes one from M.S. informing me it has recovered from an excepected error and do I want to start windows normally again. :help:

There are power supply related components on the board, but the actual power supply is the external ac adapter.

I just thought of something, though. Your problem sounds like a problem I was having briefly when I upgraded to the latest BIOS. If you are running a new BIOS, try flashing back to 1.04 and see if the problem persists. If you don't know how to do this, let me know and I can walk you through (Its quite simple, actually).

If that doesn't work, call tech support and tell them that you can't run the risk of them having the computer for weeks and perhaps months on end "fixing" it, and just want a replacement. As I said in the post, be respectful and logical and you should get what you request.

Hi Nick,

Since the CPU is soldered to the motherboard, getting a new motherboard for your computer is essentially the same as getting a new computer. You've already replaced the HD and the RAM, and it is highly unlikely that the screen, wireless card, keyboard, or plastics could cause the problems you are having.

I think your quickest and most reliable path to a solution is to let them replace the motherboard.

Hi.

At this point I am suspecting EVERYTHING.
It has gotten so bad lately.
I have noticed a a couple of things.
1. if I gently tap on the keyboard of palm rest (left or right side)
sometimes it starts properly.
I not sure if it actully helps, but it SEEMS to. (maybe its just in my mind)
Maybe somethings loose? or a fualty power button/power supply?
maybe its the CPU?
The second thing I noticed is that those times that it finally gets thru the bios and loads windows and THEN crashes/freezes the hd led is showing a lot of activity (cpu/hd working hard to complete loading all the programs or apps) So to me, the crashes and freezes SEEM to happen during high stress times.
If I wait for the HD light to calm down, let all the apps and programs load completley before I start doing anything, I am generally O.K.
Does that help pin things down?

See above quote, I have run P.C. Doctor and THREE times I ran it,
everything passed.
I am having problems just getting the machine on at this point.
in addition to it crashing once it starts and finally loads.

Nick, it's your motherboard. There really is no mystery here. Get your motherboard replaced, and you'll be a happy camper.
