New X60s w/ out an optical drive. How to fresh install XP?

#1 Post by rja » Sat Feb 17, 2007 4:37 pm

Hello everyone,
I need to do a fresh install of XP SP2 and have a few questions. Is it possible to install XP by booting and installing from a USB key? Does the ethernet adapter on the x60s support network boot? Is it possible to use an external USB DVD drive to install Windows?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions. I don't know what I would do without this forum.

Using USB optical drive will work and it's probably the easiest. That's how I fresh installed XP on a X60s.

X60s supports network boot.

That's also how I did it. rja, make sure you get into the BIOS and change the boot sequence so that the USB drive precedes the hard drive.

Thanks for the responses. It looks like I will use a USB optical drive.

Yup. I fresh installed XP Pro SP2 on my X60s after I booted it with external USB optical DVD driver.

X60s supports network boot.
I've yet to find a single guide for loading Windows XP through network boot.

Or you can keep hitting F12 during POST to get yourself a boot menu, and choose the device from there. :)

I am not certain about this, but it seems I have read that this method does not work for installing Windows. If someone has used this method successfully for installing Windows, please respond.

I know you can use networking to install windows 95/98 But not sure on xp. Even if it does, it is still not as simple as just put the cd and boot in usb optical drive.

F12 does work for selecting boot device. It has nothing to do with installing Windows.

I realize F12 selects the boot device. My foggy memory was trying to recall something about the way drive letters are assigned to the CD drive and a Ram Drive when installing Windows (not sure which version) under certain circumstances. It was a mismatch of drive letters that was causing some to have a problem installing Windows. I was thinking that the CD drive letter is fixed when set in the BIOS boot order before the hard drive, but might be changed on reboot if a Ram Drive was set up before the CD drivers loaded. Maybe all this is wrong. I just don't remember exactly what I read now, and I am not sure I am explaining myself very well.
