I have a Thinkpad X60 tablet with an ultrabase. I need the serial port, so I enabled it in the BIOS, it shows as enabled in Thinkpad Configuration, but XP doesn't see it. The only port showing on the Device Manager is the printer port. What have I missed?

OK, here's what I missed. Apparently the tablet pen, touch screen, and associated HID-compliant devices are using the resources I was trying to use for a COM port. The IR port also uses resources formerly associated with the COM ports. So I thought the solution for me would be to disable the devices using these resources, then to add the serial port through the "Add Hardware" option of the control panel. So far I haven't been able have those changes survive past reboot.....

Have you tried disabling the IR port in the BIOS, then disabling it in the hardware manager?
