verizon pc 5740 speed issue; one Thinkpad vs another

I've been using a Verizon pc 5740 for EVDO broadband wireless on my old Thinkpad G series just fine. But recently, I got an R60. The VZ connection is 2-3x slower on the R60., and also undergoes repeated hardware disconnects (powering off the card.) I had Lenovo replace the pc-card slot, without help. Anyone have any idea what could cause this? Neither IBM nor Verizon have been any help. Ideas? This is WAY too slow .. .and it's my only Internet access.
