Issues with wifi on my new x60s

#1 Post by tmkim80 » Thu Mar 08, 2007 10:10 am

Finally joined the club and got a x60s. However, I have run into some initial problems that have taken away from the overall enjoyment. After initially setting up windows xp, my wifi would work and I could access websites. However, after sleeping overnight and turning it on the next day, the wifi would not work anymore. The green wifi indicator below the LCD still comes on. When I hit fucntion key fn5, it states that the wifi is on. The wifi can also identify and connect with wifi service offered at my school. However, I keep getting error messages when I try to access websites. So I have tried multiple times formatting the computer. After the format, the wifi would initially work but then I would run into the same problem again. Does anyone know whether this is a software problem or hardware problem. I tried installing the wifi and access point drivers off the lenovo website but still no luck.

Which:

OS are you using?
WiFi card do you have?
Version of Access Connections?

If you're using Access Connections, have you tried "use windows to configure security" under the "wireless security type" option?

I think access connections is up to 4.23...I'd recommend updating it.

As for letting windows manage security...
-Start Access Connections

When you're trying to connect there will be a a picture of a computer and the wireless access point. Click on the access point. There should be a set of 5 option to change. The fourth option is the one you want to change

Be more specific - what is the error you're getting when you try to access web sites? Have you tried it on another wifi network besides at your school? Have you tried using wired internet and accessing the same sites (both at school and other locations)?

I get the error message the explorer normally delivers when it can't access a website. i am not sure what other details i can add. yesterday, my friend brought a t60 into my room that had no problems picking up the signal and accessing websites. Also, I am able to access websites through the ethernet (cable) connection. . Also, whenever i format, the wireless initially works however when I turn the computer off, it seems to stop working. could it have something to do with bluetooth? i use a bluetooth mouse and i have read somewhere it could affect the wifi.

someone please help me out. thanks

Also just to add... the greenlight below the lcd indicating the wireless is working is on. no blinking. if u do function fn5, the screen indicates that the wireless is still on.

how abt trying to disable to bluetooth first, test each issue one by one as usual i always say to install another win xp on the free partition of the x60s so u can tell if it is a software or os fault. you can also try uninstalling access connections it may be the culprit.

When you connect but cannot access the internet, what is your computer's IP address? You can find it by going to the command prompt and typing: ipconfig /all

Perhaps one of the following links will help. I would try repairing the Winsock first.

How to recover from Winsock2 Corruption

Troubleshoot TCP/IP Connectivity

Using the Network Diagnostics Tool
DKB

Thanks everyone for your help. I reformatted but did not activate bluetooth. Everything seems ok so far so I am suspecting that bluetooth is the culprit. However, I own several bluetooth devices so not having this function is a big inconvinence. Has anyone else either experienced/resolved this problem? Please let me know. Also, once again, I really appreciate everyone's support.

Since you've isolated the problem, you should contact Lenovo about support. It might be your machine or it might be a known problem with a work around
