Touchstick touching LCD?

Since I carry my X60s in my backpack, its obvious that books will put some pressure on the notebook lid. Recently I have noticed that the touchstick will make contact with the LCD screen when slight pressure is applied to the center of the lid when its closed.

Has anyone else noticed this? Its unnoticeable when the LCD is on, but when it is off, the mark from the touchstick is clearly visible. I'm worried that the LCD screen will be damaged over a period of time.

In my population of T23 systems I have noticed the trackpoint cap imprint on the LCD in only one case: a system that I received that had a soft rim cap. Since it was a used system I don't know if the previous owner(s) placed any excessive weight on top of the laptop. By "excessive" I'm talking about more that one pound. That's about I'll ever put on my systems. I also have one screen where it looks like a row of keycaps have hit the glass. As you say, it's really only noticable when the backlight is off. Small imprints like this probably will not functionally damage the LCD. They're more cosmetic.

The solution is to make sure your laptop is on top of anything that's heavy or carry it in a separate case.

I usually carry around a piece of paper to slip inbetween my keyboard and LCD. Does the trick. You'll notice after a long time that the edges of the keys start to show up on the screen as well. Apparently the grease from your hands accumulates on the keys and trackpoint and get transferred onto the screen when the lid is closed. Over time the grease on the screen will cause permanent damage. So ~ slip a piece of paper in between. it's handy too since you can use it as a piece of scrap paper in a pinch.

I bought a case just exactly for my thinkpad. No pieces of paper or books are allowed in the case. For books and pieces of papers or stationary items, i have a separate cheap backpack for that. But for most of the time, i only carry my laptop with me because we do not need textbooks and everything is based on lecture notes which can be saved on CDs and my flash drive.

Yes this is one of the things that i was really dissapointed about with my x60s the track point keeps making oil imprints on the lcd. However I have found a way of dealing with it. there are 2 other replacement track points that come with the x60s and one of them is a furry one. use that one it doesn't really give any marks at all .

I am also thinking of buying an lcd protector for my thinkpad. does anyone know of any good brand
and is there any thing to protect the notebook case itself as scratches appear on the cover.

I bought this when I noticed the trackpoint mark:

I have really liked the pad.

As mentioned, with time you would also notice the keys marking the screen.

Looks like a very nice product and a cheap investment to protect the screen. Just ordered one for my X31 and another for my T60p. It even doubles as a screen cleaning cloth. Pretty cool. Thank you for posting the link.

No matter which Trackpoint you use, sufficient pressure on the lid will cause imprints from the Trackpoint and/or the keys on the LCD. If you can't avoid the pressure or use a hard sleeve to protect the lid, use a piece of paper, or, better yet, a microfibre cloth between the screen and the keyboard when transporting your ThinkPad.

The ShaggyMac Screen Protector works great! We have used them for 2 years and our screens look absolutely mint.

I have to say, you'd think by now they'd have realized that people dont want their screen covered in bloody marks from the keyboard and trackpoint. none of my non IBM laptops ever suffered from that :/

My IBM-built X31 certainly does suffer from it -- this is no different from the Lenovo-branded X60-models.

And yet I can't really complain about it. The X31 has been through a lot, and unless you build a Toughbook-style case (with all the associated cost and weight) it's extremely difficult to prevent the back of the LCD panel from flexing (and thus contacting the keyboard and Trackpoint).

So I have chalked this one down to learning from experience, and I now recognize the need to protect my LCD panel when carrying a laptop in a soft case.

I *do* recommend using the 3M anti privacy filter screen.

Anyone tried one of these ShieldZone screen protectors? Sized for the X60t but should fit the X60, shouldn't it? I would guess it would prevent imprints.

I am also curious if anybody tried these on x60s. Moreover, I wonder if I could order a full-body shield with them. From what I could gather, their product seems to be a very good solution for screen marks and other cosmetic-related issues.

I bought one of these for my x60s I recently bought (and am still awaiting receipt). I have something similar for my MacBook and really like it.

I'm in Iraq now and my x60s is scheduled to ship on the 29th of March. I am due to arrive home for vacation on the 2nd of April. I'm hoping it ships early or on time and is waiting for me when I get home. :)

(I'm guessing there won't be a problem with the cloth getting there before I do)

I ordered two on Saturday March 10th, and both arrived late last week. Very happy with purchase. Will be ordering another one for my other X31. Hopefully yours is in the mail and will arrive soon.

Has anyone tried keyboard protectors such as these?

Ebay keyboard protector 1
Ebay keyboard protector 2

If the Trackpoint already touches the screen without anything between it and the screen, it doesn't look like these products are really helpful in this case.

I'm pretty sure I would dislike trying to type through one of those. Even if typing was fine...there is no way the trackpoint works well with a skin over it.
