...but have a couple of questions first.

1. How is the battery life/power management/etc under linux (this will be running linux exclusives (yes, this COULD go in the linux forum...but I also have X60-specific questions)
2. Any thing to look out for if I plan to swap out the hard drive and also add third party ram? (like this and this.
3. Would getting the X60s with the low voltage core duo over the x60 with the 1.83 core2duo make a noticeable difference with heat and battery life? (don't care about the weight difference all that much)

Any and all input would be much appreciated!

2. just make sure you get a compatible ram, and a decent quality brand one. I tend to get lots problem often when trying to buy cheap brand ram. any hd would do

3. heat is less on x60s i believe but battery life is the same.

I am inclined a BIT to go with the 64-bit core2duo just to future-proof the purchase a bit. But it doesn't really matter all that much cuz I rarely go a year without buying a new laptop.

If the heat/battery life/etc is noticeably better with the low voltage core duo (1.67Ghz, I believe), I will go that route.

There are quite a few more too. Linux does not have very good power management. Even running Slackware, people have reported dismal battery life in comparison to XP. I'll look into it further, for I plan on dual booting soon as well, with my new X60s.

You'll gain 10-20% in battery life with an X60s, and that really corresponds to slightly reduced heat from the CPU itself as the other components (apart from the optional ultralight LCD, which is not available on the X60) are essentially identical.

On the other hand, X60s carries a significant premium, and you'll have a lower-performance CPU.

The 7K100 hard disk (should also be available as an option) will give you the best performance but the 5K160 is a nice drive, too, and has that 60 GB of extra capacity ...

What ever u do make sure you get the UL lcd. This was the biggest mistake i made when i purchased the x60s. 25% more brightness and 25 % less weight for your lcd.
All in all the x60s has been what i was hopping for.(except for that annoying blink when i open and close the lcd)

I thought the "s" implied the lighter LCD? Anyway, I don't see any specific LCD options from within the different X60 models via the Lenovo website.

The two X60s CTO (configure to order) models on Lenovo's US web site both have the ultralight LCD: "ThinkPad X60s Ultralight" and "ThinkPad X60s Ultralight with Bluetooth".

However, if you check the tabook, you will find that, in fact, mos X60s models do not have the ultralight LCD. So pay attention when choosing your system:

So, currently you CAN'T buy a x60s without the UL screen...but that is subject to change??

Why don't you just sell it and get a used (but in nice condition) ultralight X60s? That's what I would do.
