BIOS Beep Tones

#1 Post by Comage » Tue Mar 13, 2007 3:46 am

Ok, so sometimes I type really fast and accidentally press 3 keys together, which triggers the BIOS beep tone.

It's especially loud, even when the volume is set to 1 notch. It's even louder when I have an amplified speaker connected to my X60.

The volume of the beep tone doesn't match that reflected in the volume display.

How do you turn off the BIOS beep tones without muting the speaker output?

I did it by disabling the hidden device called "Beep" in Windows Device Manager.

Hmm.. I don't believe I have that under my Device Manager. Could you post a screenshot of how it looks like?

Click on "View" and "Show Hidden Devices." Look for "Beep" under "Non Plug and Play Drivers." Then disable it. That will fix it. Event viewer may show an error on startup, but it won't affect anything other than turning off the annoying beep.

Ah I found it! Thanks!

Is it very common of users to disable this, or am I the only one asking about this?

It's pretty common and not restricted to X60 users either.
