Installing CD through Network?

#1 Post by Kwak » Tue Mar 27, 2007 5:03 pm

Hi all,

With the x60, I am trying to see if I can avoid getting an external dvd burner.

If I were to install softwares from a CD, is there a way to network with my desktop so that the CD is in the desktop cd drive and install the software through some network?

Not familiar with home-networking.

Assuming both computers are on the same home network it is really easy to do.

First, put the CD in the CD drive of your computer, then right click on the drive and change the sharing properties to allow sharing over the network. Give the drive an easy to remember sharing name. I called mine 'D'.

On your laptop, in the address bar of any explorer window (like my computer) type the path to the computer with the drive.

ex: \\desktop\D

From there you can just click on the set-up launcher to start the installer.

The other option is to set the CD drive as a network drive, this may be easier if you use that CD drive a lot.

Hope that helps.

Appreciate the help donthurtme.

The notebook has not arrived, hence the questions.
If I were to create the recovery discs, could I use this method (home network) to burn the cds? The cdburner is in the desktop and the recovery disc program is from the x60.

hi there,

no i dont think you can burn to a cd drive remotely.

though this may be irrelevant:

just because you can install software from a network does not guarantee mean that you can install windows from network. i.e. i presume that you are burning the recovery cds for use with your x60 - if so, then you will probably need a cd rom drive when you want to recover from those cds.

though x60 allows booting from network, i have no idea how one might achieve this with the recovery cd.

hope this helps,
tian

You can write CD/DVD with the following program:
http://www.padus.com/downloads/network.php

You will never backup to network dvd writer with the RNR.
Therefore you cannot make recovery discs to network...

I installed Vista (from within XP) over the network. I just mounted the shared DVD drive as a network drive, and launched the installation from there. This seems to work well, as long as you don't want to change your partions.
