Do these use the 1.8 or can you use a 2.5?

You can use 2.5" SATA drives.
Some Japanese X60s have 1.8" in them.

A 2.5 slot can take 2.5 or 1.8 drives.

Just delivered an X60 a couple of hours ago. There is a 2.5" SATA drive in the X60 that I bought I am happy to report. Nice touch. The client was very pleased with the whole package. They asked if ThinkPads were my favorite. I nodded.

sugo: You would need a mounting rack or something to fit those 1.8" drives, won't you?

Is there a limit on the size of HD you can put in a X60?
I seem to recall some 2.5" drives are to thick.

I'm not sure about that, but I know for sure Hitachi Travelstars would definitely fit.

I hesitate between Hitachi Samsung and Seagate.
For sure 160GB at 7200rpm would be cool but can't find better than 100GB at 7200rpm in Europe so I'll have to go 5400 rpm route :'(

The Seagate has the longest warranty. 5 years versus 3 years for Hitachi. Not sure about Samsung but I think they are also 3 years. They probably are not going to make any PATA drives larger than 160gb. Everything bigger will most likely be the newer SATA drives and hopefully they will be 7.2k rpm.

I would hate to see the dental bills.

Good one
Should be more or less OK as SATA has a lot fewer pins than PATA I expect dental bills to lower significantly.

I suspect seagate 160gb/7200rpm drives will be available in May07. They will be pricey at ~ $300 usd.
