Is it possible to install a non-factory version of Windows?

#1 Post by workingTeacher » Tue Apr 03, 2007 3:49 pm

I'm trying to install a different version of windows (XP or 2000) from my retail version install CDs using an extenal USB CD-drive, and when the installation gets to the point where it says, 'starting windows" the installation will stop, saying "Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer." I have disabled all the security options in the BIOS and repartitioned and formatted the hard drive (including the hidden Thinkpad partition). I've tried both Win2000 and XP Pro install CDs and the same thing happens. I have the Recovery CD so I can put back the factory installation, but I'm amazed I cannot install a different operating system if I want. It's my computer! Does anyone know of a way to accomplish this?

Thanks...

You need to set SATA to compatibility mode in BIOS. There are other many old threads on this topic.

Thanks! I appreciate it. I'm more and more disappointed each time (twice now) I have called Lenovo for support. The guy told me it was a Microsoft issue and I would have to speak to them.
