Im looking for some help. I''ve just purchased a new X60 Tablet. There are currently 95 processes running. I know this is way too many and unnecessary. The problem is how do I know which ones are required/needed.
Due to soo many things runnning, My 8 cell battery does not last as long as it should. For instance, ive been on the computer for less than 30 minutes and im at 81% left on the charge.

Can anyone give me an idea on how to tell which processes/programs I need and which ones to disable?

It's difficult and very time consuming to pin-point which background process is needed. Intel graphics driver can have 2-5 processes running at any given time. Killing those processes may not blow your machine but the side effects are hardly obvious.

My personal experience would suggest serious consideration of a clean install of Windows from scratch and install needed drivers / thinkvantage software on it. My X60s has around 27 processes running upon Windows XP login.

Check in Task Manager what is running. Many processes (most of them) tend to idle away at zero CPU unless needed, and have little impact on battery life in my experience. ... JDH

Are you running XP or Vista?

If XP you are in luck - there is an excellent post on gottabemobile.com that shows you how to do a clean install which will make your machine fly like you cannot even begin to imagine now. Trust me, this is well worth it - my old X 41 runs as well as my 1.8 GHz X60 (the X60 is on Vista).

If you are on Vista you have more difficulty. In that case you best approach is to make recovery CDs, then recover the machine and do a selective recovery. During this selective recovery you install the absolute minimum - there are posts here as well as at gottabemobile that would help you to decide what to install and what to keep.

Both options require some effort bit is worth it - the XP one is worth the effort 50 times over - the Vista one is not as dramatic as the XP one but still well worth it.
