Battery life watching DVD on external USB-powered drive?

#1 Post by ProPedderKustoms » Thu Apr 12, 2007 3:13 pm

I have an X60 and am getting a Plextor USB-bus powered DVD player/burner. How much life should I expect using that setup in conjunction with an 8 cell battery? Can I get through 2 movies? Just 1? Thanks.

It depends a lot on the power comsumption of the external drive.
I guess you could probably get 2 movies if all wireless is disabled and screen not too bright.

But you should know that optical drives are battery eaters. If you can, rip those to your hard drive and read'em from there.

I have the drive you mentioned, but haven't tested how it affects battery life. I don't know your specific circumstances, but if you are looking to have some entertainment (watching movies) while on the road, I'd suggest you use a different method: Copy the movie from the DVD over to the hard drive before you trip and watch the movies of your hard drive instead of the optical drive. It will save on battery life and is less hassle than dealing with optical drive while traveling.

Like I said, I don't know your circumstances, so I the above suggestion may or may not meet your needs.
