Has anyone used generic ram to upgrade their ram in the thinkpad? By that, I mean RAM that can be ordered from NewEgg or bought at the local store...

It seems that if you go online to Crucial, you need to order "specfic" x60 tablet RAM. Is that just a marketinf ploy?

There's a thread here, so I want to know if I can just buy 2 gb cheap...

The prices on Crucial.com have gone down a lot. They used to be something like 50% above Newegg's prices. For the X60 tablet, 2x1GB is only $132, very close to the prices on Newegg.com. Crucial.com has always been the safest way to upgrade, and now it's also a very affordable way.

Please read what jimc wrote again, more carefully.

I thought you wanted to get 2x1GB when you said you wanted 2GB. If you install 2x2GB, I think the Thinkpad can only see 3GB due to chipset limitations, so you probably should buy 1GB + 2GB instead. Another issue is Newegg.com currently doesn't have any 2GB PC2-5300 sticks. They normally have three ($225 G.SKILL, $235 Patriot, and $440 CORSAIR) but they're sold out. Just keep checking and eventually they'll be available again. The four most popular sources of RAM sticks are crucial.com, newegg.com, frys.com and eBay.

That's not true. The 3GB limit applies to the Intel 945 chipset. You could install Vista, Linux, or OS X and none of them will recognize more than 3GB. You'll probably have to wait until Santa Rosa to get recognition of 4GB by an OS.

Hi, I already had one 1gb stick when I ordered my x60 tablet. So I ordered another 1gb stick to make a total of 2gb.

Basically IMHO any RAM would do AS LONG AS the warranty is "Lifetime", which most RAM have anyways.
I bought mine when it was $52 and free shipping, but right now it's $54+$5 shipping. I'm sure there're cheaper and better ones out there.

If you want two 2gb sticks, pianowizard is right you only see 3gb

You can argue about it all you like, but on the Lenovo site right now you can order an X60 Tablet with 4GB of Ram. That's what I meant when I said it was an "option". Standard is 2 sticks of 512. Also elsewhere on the site it says XP will only recognize 3GB. You may want to address that with Lenovo, rather than shoot the messenger.

does that include the memory allocated to video ram? so, if i get 4 gb in my computer, will 512 mb be allocated to VRAM and then the other 3 gb by xp then 512 wasted?

The option to buy 4GB exists whether you choose XP Tablet Edition or Vista Business Edition. If you select either operating system and the 4GB option it says:

"You have chosen installed physical memory size of 4GB; however, actual usable memory size is limited to 3GB"

Now, why they even offer that option is completely beyond me.

No, 3gb is everything you get.

OK I get it. I was just saying they offered it. I also read on Lenovo's site XP was limited to 3gigs but haven't seen anything until this thread about vista being limited. Good to know since I'm ordering tomorrow!
