Do you have Vista? It's probably SuperFetch working.

No its XP. I don't have too many of Thinkvantage services still running - just Active Protection and Rescue and Recovery.

Problem solved, I deactivated rescue and recovery and it went away. Would still like to have that working without all the noise :)

Gah - looks like I jumped the gun on that one - noise still there. I wounder what it could be. It sounds a lot like the X41 guys describe with the head on thier drive parking all the time.

Any suggestions?

I have the same clunking noise. It comes and goes without any pattern, and I can't figure out what program may be the culprit. I removed Rescue and Recovery and it's still there. Whenever it "clunks," the disk access light flickers. I've tried monitoring processes, file access and registry access using a file monitor program, but I can't track this down. It does sound like the heads are parking, but it doesn't seem related to the active protection system.

I've tried everything except upgrading the harddrive firmware. They have it on the lenovo site, but only for comps with a CD-ROM. There is a way to use a USB drive to do it, but I don't have the time to fiddle with it now.
I let you know if it works - I'll probably do the firmware sunday.

LOL, I just keep the music playing all the time now so i don't hear it.

Well, we both have Fujitsu drives, so I'll be interested in your firmware upgrade result.

Having nothing better to do , I upgraded the firmware in my Fujitsu hard drive just now. The model is MHV2120BH and it upgraded from version 00840029 to 0084002A. I ran a test on the drive and so far, so good. We'll see if it solves the mystery clunk.

i've got the Fujitsu MHV2120BH, and i report the exact same periodic clicking sound under Linux. it seems to come about every 5-10 seconds, is most noticeable when the drive is not being accessed, and sounds like the heads are parking. i've noticed the following:

+ it definitely doesn't do it all the time... though if i leave the computer on over night, it is usually clicking by the time i wake up in the morning.

+ once it shifts into the state where it starts clicking, the only way to get it to stop is to completely shut off the computer (a cold start). a warm reboot (without powering off) does not make it go away.

i just upgraded the HD firmware as the previous poster suggested, and i'm praying that it fixes it... probably won't know for a couple days.

also, for the record, I have an el-cheap-o Lenovo 3000 N100 (0768 A53). however, i think this is a Fujitsu MHV2xxx issue, not specific to the Thinkpad X60.

I'm resurrecting this old thread. I'm still getting the hard drive "clunking" sound even after upgrading the firmware on the Fujitsu hard drive. It's puzzling since it goes for long periods of time without doing it. But right now, it's doing it every 5 to 10 seconds. Sounds like the heads are parking and the disk access light flickers with the sound. Did anyone ever solve this one?

Here's another thread without a solution:

chirping clunking sounds from hard-drive

Hi There

I am very glad to have found this thread, I've read through it all and agree with the behaviours noted.

Aperiodic nature of the problem, the chirping and clunking noises every few seconds and the disk activity light flicker.

I've done the configuration and system process audits, monitoring CPU, disk activity and differential disk activity to no effect. All the usual suspects like the indexer were already disabled long ago.

My unit is a X60s Model type 17023JU running XP SP2.

The drive is a FUJITSU Model MHV2060BH PL Firmware Revision 0084002A.

I run a SMART monitor on the drive and it's AOK.

Just reporting from the trenches, I hope ThinkPad engineering closely monitor boards such as these. OTOH if that was true, would there still be so many issues with thinkpad fan control? :D

Hopefully after a good night's shutdown, it's boot bright eyed and bushy tailed.

chirp, chrrup, clunk, chronic head-parking problem

Just an update some time down the track.

The "chirrups" keep manifesting aperiodically, ruining the dream of a "serene machine".

Time to liaise with Lenovo Tech Support - it's going to hurt, image backups before any HD replacement - there's no way I am going to reinstall everything..
