Gray spot on screen -- normal?

Today the screen of my x60s all of a sudden developed a gray oval spot about 1.5x2 mm. It is situated visibly below the image layer, somewhere on the white backlight. It is not a dead pixel, and not a speck of dirt on the surface.

It does not annoy me by itself, but having them pop up on the screen sure does.

What would you suggest? What is Lenovo's policy toward such glitches?

It might be a pressure mark - they develop if there is too much pressure on one part of the screen, maybe if packed in a too full bag, or if stuff is piled on top of it.

I know what you mean, but it is not a pressure mark. It is more like a mole on the backlight layer. It developed on the spot where no pressure is ever applied.

I don't think it's normal. From your description it seems similar to what I have on my screen, except mine is white and not gray, and is located very close to the right edge - mine looks as if there's a small hole in the depths of the panel with light coming through. I hope to take it into service next week and see what they tell me.

My guess: dust under the screen. Watch to see if it moves around with time.

I had one of these appear for no apparent reason. And the position wasn't even anywhere near the trackpoint cap.

I tried rubbing at it with some isopropyl and distilled water cleaning fluid, but I didn't notice it when my lint-free cloth went dry, and ended up with a circular scratch-mark on my screen.

My advice to you is, try to clean it, but if it stays there persistently, forget about it. Call up Lenovo and see what they say (if it's in the smack-centre of your screen, your chances of receiving a replacement might be higher).

It is not dust. The screen is damaged from pressure. The same thing happened to both my old X40 and my current X60s. IBM replaced the screen each time.

Brought it to Lenovo service center, they agreed to replace the screen and in the process said to me the mother board also needed to be replaced.

I hope they did not screw it up themselves. Still waiting...

Fred, it worked out for me in the following way -- they finally replaced the mother board, which did take care of the problem with the screen, but in the process they broke the chassis, fixed it with glue and hoped I would not notice it. I did, though, and now am waiting for the chassis replacement as well.

All in all, having had x60s in repair for major replacemens four times in just half a year, I am starting to have second thoughts about staying with Lenovo.

My two former Fujitsu lappies (P2120 and P5020) never gave me a single problem in 5 years.

A bad and lame technician perhaps.

4 times is too much. 1 time is normal, 2nd time could be coincidence, 3rd time blowing out of proportion, 4th time is simply chaos.

Sorry for being slightly off-key, but does stripping the components apart to clean the insides (motherboard and heatsink fan unit) voids the warranty?

I've looked over this thread and think that I have similar problems with my X60 display. Its about a year old and has not been subject to any extraordinary pressure to the screen. Recently I noticed some gray cloudy spots on the screen. If the screen is tilted at 90 degrees and I look down on the spots it seems like they are clear spaces, each about 1 cm squared, with visible white light.

Does anyone have ideas about why this happens? Are the any manufacturing issues known?

Lenovo service claims such display damage is not under guarantee.

This is not true. I took mine in with a much less pervasive problem and they replaced the screen with no hassle (if you do not count the broken bezel and twice replaced motherboard, memory and fan as a hassle

).

So please pester them some more. It sure pays.

I know the exact spots you are talking about. I've had them on multiple models (T43, X41, X41 Tablet, X60 Tablet). Not only was the spot on multiple systems but is would also come and go on some of them. I have no idea what causes the spot but it is not dust or burnt out pixels. The spot is perfectly round so I suspect they are from some sort of mounting standoff behind the screen.

It depends on your location - where you bought your thinkpad and get it serviced at.

Been to IBM Singapore countless of times and they knew about my habit of stripping the machine while it is on warranty status. As long as you don't anyhow swap the machine parts or remove whatever stickers inside the machine, then it is fine.
