X60 Tablet downgrade from Vista

#1 Post by Fleche » Thu Apr 26, 2007 6:54 pm

Just ordered an X60 Tablet, it came with Vista and I have a few softwares that's not working with it, so I want to downgrade to Windows XP Tablet edition. Problem is when I called Lenovo tech support, the tech tells me because of some disagreement with Microsoft, they can't send me the XP recovery CDs! Now I'm kinda stuck, anyone have any ideas on how I can do this?

Maybe send the machine back to Lenovo and re-order a machine with XP.

Maybe work.

I might have that back to front actually Flech.
An X60 Product Recovery will DEF recover an X40 machine. I Might have said that back to front.

Hhhmm.oops

I have got the X60 ThinkPad Product Recovery
1DV, 1CD.
It's on xpprosp2 EN platform. ??

I see your problem. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/327160

Q1: Where can I purchase a copy of Windows XP Tablet PC Edition?

A1: Because Windows XP Tablet PC Edition has specific hardware requirements, it can only be obtained pre-installed on a Tablet PC computer. You cannot buy Windows XP Tablet PC Edition separately.

Q2: Can I upgrade my portable computer to Windows XP Tablet PC Edition?

A2: No. Windows XP Tablet PC Edition is only available pre-installed on Tablet PC hardware. Because there are specific hardware requirements to run Windows XP Tablet PC Edition, upgrading non-Tablet hardware is not supported.
I wish I could offer more help. Hopefully you can somehow acquire a copy of the Product Recovery Disc set for the ThinkPad X60 Tablet.

My X60T bought form Hong Kong is come with Windows XP Tablet PC Edition, don't know why no VISTA model of X60T in Hong Kong.

I just bought a box set of vista ulitmate and install on my X60T it run very well, i think if your laptop have 2GB RAM there is no reason downgrade to Windows XP

There's still some software compatibility issues in Vista
By 2008 second half, Vista should be mostly okay...

yeah,

if you are happy with losing aoround an hour battery life, once wifi is on even more, in comparison to win xp! taking into consideration having installed the usb power drain patch for table xp!

helps a lot having tablet functions implemented rather well in vista, but not being able to use it normally prolonged on battery once on construction site etc.!!! as long as this is not resolved, forget about vista on notebooks, as far as i am concerned!!!

Dell, HP would have told you the same. You are only authorized for Vista on your tablet, not XP. It has nothing to do with any disagreement with MS.... It has everything to do with licensing.

WHile MS has a downgrade program that allows downgrading to xp, it only applies to volume license holders.-read, large businesses.

You are stuck as I don' think you can buy XP Tablet off the shelf. If you get the recovery CD's for xp tABLET, you are in essence pirating.

I'm not sure I consider it pirating in this case. If your taking vista off and putting XP on you are in essence paying more for XP. A few months ago you could buy the machine with XP and get a free Vista "upgrade" when it was available. I wish I had gone that route, because then I could dual boot until Vista is squared away.

I'm looking for recovery discs (or copies) for BOTH. Chances are I'll have to buy them. Back when I bought my A31, I got recovery discs for both 2000 and XP Pro, and didn't pay a dime. They had great customer service and wanted to make me happy. Not sure how Lenovo will handle this but based on this post, seems unlikely it would be the same.

When I bought my second A31 it had XP P on it so in the end I have COAs for BOTH, but that was a year later.

I have a doc from Microsoft that states the downgrade is completely allowed. We are in the process of dealing with Lenovo on this. I'll keep you posted.
