LYNKSYS wireless help for thinkpad

I purchased a LYNKSYS WRT54GS, connected it to the ethernet to my desktop. The CD wizard ran the set up which it tells me is successful, The previous ethernet which was speedy is now slow. I still can't connect to the internet via my wireless card. I bought a linksys WUSB54GSC USB compact wireless-G adapter with speedbooster. Still no connection.



I would really value some wisdom on this. I can't believe getting my Thinkpad up and going is such a problem.

Hard reset. Configure it manually; don't use the CD.

As smvp6459 said, use the config on the device itselves.

I owned a WAG54GS (which I strongly advice not to buy, I returned it myself) and the "online" wizard was all I needed. You probably get there when surfing to 192.168.1.1 using your wired computer.

Also check if your thinkpad can't connect to the linksys or just the internet (which could mean the linksys isn't connected to the internet at all or doesn't allow internet acess through wireless).

I have a friend locally who recommended the G version - said it is much faster than my ISP's Ethernet connection and I did not need the N version.

Since the Thinkpad came with a wireless card, I was not thinking I needed the USB connection device (which I purchased for a computer I was planning to get my son for graduation, and the device was on sale. Perhaps it is because it is a unique wireless system? Or because I secured the Linksys?

In any event, after my post to the forum and working on it manually for about an hour more, I realized I could do a live chat with Linksys. So 2 chats and almost 2 hours later we were able to get it set. Perseverance pays!

I know this is not related to this topic per se, but several on this forum have posted about creating clean installs. I would like to delete anything NOT necessary to my system operations, but unclear on what that might be for the list generated. Is it possible to post the list to this forum and have someone advise me what is non-essential?

Perhaps I am naive in assuming a Thinkpad with only some software added and no files saved as yet would be reasonably speedy. I did delete the Norton and related items. I am using NOB32 (Thanks Bill! ) but the system runs slow. I have a 6365. If anyone is game to help me out, I will either do so in this post, create a new post or PM - as appropriate.

It takes me about 5-10 minutes to set up a WRT54G on a new system. I do it all the time. I actually carry one with me. I'm also using hacked firmware to make it more useful, but also far more complicated. Don't ever install the Linksys utilities if you are on XP or above. The utilities are needed for pre XP machines.


As far as the 6365, I've been working on mine for about a week and a half. You can press the blue Thinkvantage button while starting it up, then start a factory restore. During this process you can get to a custom install and choose what to install. I have the X6 docking station so I chose EZ Eject Utility. I unchecked EVERYTHING else!

All necessary drivers are installed automatically. When you run Windows Update you can find more under optional updates. You can also go to Lenovo's support site and download updates there. You don't need System Update installed.

Once you have completely restored you can TURN OFF certain "FEATURES" of Vista that are most annoying. I posted links to the website that shows how to do this in another thread so just click on me and view all posts and you should find it easily.

I'm currently getting a long fine now that I have done all of this. I'm using AVG Free, so you might even have better performance with NOD32, which I read is low on resources. I'm using Daemon tools as a virtual drive, and Win DVD for a player. I have Office 2007 installed. I have turned off error reporting, and pretty much everything else except automatic updates, although I was considering turning that off too. It's running much better now.

I'm going to do a clean install of XP Tablet and see how much faster that is. I still don't have the media.
