Wireless radio power control

Problem: my wireless radio no longer turns off by itself when it is not connected to a wireless connection. Access Connections is set to have automatic power control. It used to do this, but it does not do it any longer. So even at work, where I have no wireless profile, the wireless radio stays on unless I turn it off manually.

Any ideas? All help would be appreciated.
