Testing RAM without CD drive

#1 Post by xbertmx » Wed Jun 06, 2007 1:00 pm

Just received my X60T a few days ago, and on the first day I added in a Kingston memory DIMM (1GB) from newegg. It's been working perfectly for at least a week, and then today in the middle of working a blue screen message popped up.

nmi parity check memory parity error

And then I had to restart.

I'm hoping this is just a blip, but I thought I'd make sure the memory I bought from newegg is working fine. But the memory test programs I've seen so far (memtest86.com and the microsoft program) both need you to boot from a floppy or CD to run the tests.

Can anyone either tell me how to boot one of these prorgams, or is there a decent (and hopefully free) program I could use otherwise?

Thanks very much.

I read somewhere they were finicky about none IBM memory. My friend and I ordered ours together with 1 gig each. When we received them we put both sticks in his machine and I used a pair of Adata sticks I got from NewEgg. Niether of us have had issues so I'm wondering if they just don't like mismatched sticks. I'd like to put a 2 gig stick in later on so it would be nice to know.

I wonder if you can run memtest from a USB key.

As long as you can format the USB thumb drive as a bootable image (like a floppy or CD) and if the laptop supports booting from USB, then I don't see why this would not work.

If the X60T came with PC Doctor already installed, then you can use that program.
