Advice on those who ownded a x41 but now own x60

#1 Post by clearlipstick » Sat Jun 09, 2007 10:24 pm

First of all Id like to say high to everyone reading. I'm new here and am thankful for such a sight.

I purchased a second hand x41 from Ebay with docking station extra gig and is like new. I was so pleased with the unit until I did a poke around and noticed that others were complaining about the hard disk size. Now call me weak but this has made me a little paranoid about the unit. Others complain about the ticking, of which mine does also. I own a desk top which is a 3.06 mhz and it is faster then this unit to be honest and this also is eating at me a little. I had searched hoping there was a way of making it faster in regards to pages loading and applications also but sadly the h/disk cannot be upgraded. I want the unit to last me a few years and will be needing it for Uni. Of those who have upgraded, can you please tell me was it really worth the extra funds? Also will I miss anything on the x60 unit that this one has, like the little light up the top of the screen thats helps me to see at night. Does the x61 heat up a lot more then the x41? I know this topic has come up before but a little reassurance on what the benifits are would be great.

hi clearlipstick,

first of all upgrade the ram to the max (1,5gb or 1,2gb dependiing on your mb). the ram updgrade made my x40 to go excellent.
make sure you have a clean system, i do a regular recovery each ~3 months and everytime i see a biiig difference.

is no way to compare x41 with the dual core anf 7200 hdd, but if your uni job is only office processing and internet, i'd stay with x41

ps: for home use i use the hdd ultrabay adapter with a 5400hdd, and the system's speed is way much better than with its traditional hdd!

Um. next time, try not to crosspost this on 2 or more forums.

The primary issue with the X4x series is that they do not use standard 2.5" notebook drives. They use a 1.8" drive which run slower (4200rpm instead of the 5400 or 7200rpm on the 2.5" drives). The clicking sound? It's just the drive doing re-alignments. No, the drive can be upgraded. Check Hitachi Global Storage Solutions for the C4K60 series if you want more capacity. If you are concerned about speed you can always go solid state disk later.

Unless you are using it as a database development platform, you are not really going to feel it being slow-slow. It's a notebook computer - it will never really feel as fast as a desktop PC, because, well, it's designed to be portable and efficient, not fast.

The only big benefit of going from X4x to X6x is that Lenovo went back to 2.5" drives, and that a few have dualcore processors. For normal, non-business, academic use you'll be hard-pressed to notice the difference - it's still the same classic design, and unless someone in Raleigh or Tokyo (Where Thinkpads are designed) snapped you are not going to lose the ThinkLight anytime soon.

Dorin..Ragefury..
Sorry about posting in two places but I just assumed those who owned a x60 would not frequent the x41 area.

I really needed the advice as I have little funds but could probably still get a good price on my x41 if I sell now.
I thank you for your unbiased opinion it has helped me feel at ease.
I would like to know a little more about the solid state disk.
Is there a particular brand I should look into?

Thank you and God Bless
Tiffany

Um. There's no reason to resell an X41 if you are perfectly happy with it - after all, I entertained the idea of buying an X41t myself.

The X6 series are nice, but they are kinda expensive for people on a budget.

As for Solid State Disks, they are currently not sold on retail (as they are introduced as "ATG" options on Dell D420/620 machines), but they are about 4 to 6x more expensive than equivalent hard drives...as for brands, Samsung, Sandisk, A-Data. Basically your typical flash drive vendors.
