X60t New hard drive 5k160 fan noise

#1 Post by ds » Mon Jun 11, 2007 1:40 pm

Hello all,
I installed a new Hitachi 5k160 160gb 5400 rpm hard drive in place of the Lenovo supplied 80gb Fujitsu 5400rpm hard drive.

Now the fan near the left corner of my X60T seems to always be running. What gives, any ideas? If I can't get this fixed I'll have to either put the old drive in or buy another drive...

Have you tried to measure HDD running temperature? One utility is MobileMeter.

MobileMeter, from top to bottom reads:

Frequency: 1.66Ghz
Temp: 57.0C
Temp: 64.0C
Charge Rate: 0.00w
HDD #0: 35.0C

ThinkWiki reports that reducing voltage can stop constant fan spinning. (http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Problem_with_fan_noise) As reported by Toms Hardware, my new 5k160 uses a whopping 0.2w MORE then Fujitsu (http://www23.tomshardware.com/storage25 ... &chart=156)

Maybe that's it?

What do you get on your X60t readings? If I can't figure this out, anyone want to buy my 5k160? It's run time has been less then 24 hours!
