Actually, I think I left out the part that for kicks I clicked on the "Reserve Now" link and got the "enter your reservation code" screen.

It looks great, but I don't think I would pay $5,000! That's waaaaaay outside my price range! :D :? :(

With $5000 I can buy the whole X6x series (X61+X61s+X61T).

So the leather case and the tech support costs 2 X6x . BTW, I wonder how the 24x7 onsite tech support work.

Say, if my Windows broke down, can I call the tech guy to come to my place at 12am and tell him "Reinstall the windows and restore my previous backup for me. Have it on my desk when I wake up at 7am."?

Honestly... this is the creme of the crop of all splurges. We're essentially talking about a normal Thinkpad wrapped in cowhide. And it's not exactly like we're living in a generation where leather is extremely rare.

Five thousand dollars just for exclusivity, prestige and support? Seems like overkill to me. It's unlikely that the system would fail within the support years anyway, and with that amount of money one could buy two normal Thinkpads and have a permanent backup system, if so inclined.

They have completely lost their minds with this. It's absurd, it's ridiculous (the Paris Hilton of notebooks!), while, meanwhile, their bread and butter - the R-series and the T-series - are turning out to be woefully uncompetitive. (Has anyone seen the new Sony FZ series? Just as you once 'couldn't go wrong ordering IBM', in the corporate world you also can't go wrong ordering Sony.)

This is an embarrassing, dumb idea.

Wow. 5.000$ for an X60s in a leather casing.

Sure, the 24/7 warranty on-site thing is great, but come on! For that kind of cash, I would rather buy a brand new X60s (in case of breakdown) and swap the harddrives in the time it would take Lenovo technicians to fly out anyways. And still, it would be cheaper than shelling out 5.000$ for a reserve edition with moo-skin. And I would have two X60s', of course.

This product is so incredibly shallow. Is it just me or is David Hill's eyes following a cue card?

I'm not surprised that in the end, its just a standard, leather covered ThinkPad.

That said, I think you're all missing the point. Look at all the free publicity Lenovo is getting out of this!

The reserve edition may get a few people who otherwise would not have considered a ThinkPad, to visit Lenovo’s website out of curiosity…and may end up buying one of the “regular” TP or Lenovo notebooks.

Its like Ford selling a $100,000 car. It will get people in to the door of the dealership, who will end up buying a $20,000 Mustang.

24/7 support, that’s nice. But I would assume every CEO can just call the "tech guy" in the company he/she is running. I’m sure Lenovo is contracting out for the tech support anyway. Overall, you're paying for exclusivity. Period.

Personally, I think its ugly. I’ve always liked the sleek, minimalist look of the ThinkPad. IMHO, the reserve edition should have been something like the piano finish s30/31 with a handmade leather slip case.

Lenovo, if you’re listening…bring back the s30/31! But with a faster CPU. The “ultra mobile” market is heating up!

I love my X-series, but wish Lenovo made a 10” notebook.

Interestingly, as I posted in another thread, at least in Japan, Vaios appear to have completely fallen out of favour as corporate notebooks. I used to see them on a regular basis in meetings, but now it's 90% Panasonic and ThinkPad.

Agreed. But high-worth individuals not working for Fortune 500 companies (investors, celebrities, sports stars, inherited/married wealth etc) may not have access to such IT departments. And they do have a lot of buying power, and the Reserve Edition is by no means highly priced for this segment -- check out Vertu for a comparison. Standard Nokia technology at $10K+ per phone, including a lot of personalized service.

I infer you had to pay extreme 'tips' for tech guys. :D
