Hey I noticed something interesting.

http://www.luiswatkins.com/x61/images/X ... G_4781.jpg

There is a crack on each side of the keyboard.
On the right side it is above the Forward Page web key, and below the Shift key. On the left side it is net to the lower part of the FN key.

My X60 Tablet part by the keyboard (bezel?) is one piece.

Also on your X61T there is a vent under the IBM Thinkpad logo, next to the latch which I do not have. Clearly they are trying to address the hot hand situation.

I wonder if it is possible to switch out the case top, and also get that little fan that is supposed to be in there. Is the vent where the fan blows out?

pianowizard: we have some answers to that question in this thread: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=45566

The new X61 models do have a 2nd fan installed (only comes from factory with the new fan if you have a WWAN card) and one person is trying to outfit their X60 with the new X61 palmrest and fan and hoping it will fit.

Hmmm... Interesting. My tablet doesn't have a WWAN card, but there's definitely air coming out of the extra vent under the right palmrest.

That may be - but for the X61/s (not t) models the second fan comes with WWAN. I've glanced the X61T HMM over and saw no mention of a second fan nor any module that looked like it - the closest was the speaker, but it's labeled as speaker. You could be feeling heat coming from the vent for any number of reasons besides a fan being present: heat radiates, hot air rises (so it is coming out of the vents on it's own), or some sort of back/side draft from the main system fan.

Either way I've heard that the X61T palmrests are much cooler than the X61's and I can't see why - the WiFi cards are located in the same place... :?:

X60T right palm is HOT! Would love some relief.

Having used an X60t and now using an X61t, the latter definitely solved the hot palmrest issue.... Upgrading is a somewhat expensive solution the the problem, though.

(unfortuntely, though, the system fan on my X61t has been on constantly tonight... usually I never notice it because its off... These Thinkpads are giving me as much problems as I expect, and tried to avoid, from a Dell.)

Could very well be. I hadn't even noticed the vent until I read this thread, so I immediately wet my finger and held it there to see if air was coming out.

I haven't noticed the palmrests feeling hot, however there is quite a bit of heat pumping out of the vent at the left back corner.

It just came Friday, so I've only been playing with it for a short time. I'm still getting used to the smaller keyboard and learning to write on the screen. Overall, it seems to be a well-made little thing. And, of course, it's just so cute! ;-)
